✧ Mention of the notable persons who died in this year 2532 - Aḥmad b. Muḥammad b. Ziyād b. Bishr b. Dirham, Abū Saʿīd Ibn al-Aʿrābī al-Baṣrī. He resided in Makkah and became the shaykh of the Ḥaram, and he accompanied al-Junayd, al-Nūrī, Ḥasan al-Musūḥī, and others. He transmitted ḥadīth, composed books for the Sufis, and died in Makkah on Sunday, between ẓuhr and ʿaṣr, on the twenty-seventh of Dhū al-Qaʿdah of this year. 2533 - Ismāʿīl b. Muḥammad b. Ismāʿīl [b. Ṣāliḥ], Abū ʿAlī al-Ṣaffār al-Naḥwī, the companion of al-Mubarrad. He heard al-Ḥasan b. ʿArafah al-ʿAbdī, ʿAbbās al-Dūrī, Muḥammad b. ʿUbayd Allāh al-Munādī, and others. Ibn al-Muẓaffar, al-Dāraquṭnī, Ibn Razqawayh, Hilāl al-Ḥaffār, and Abū al-Ḥusayn b. Bishrān narrated from him. He was trustworthy. Al-Dāraquṭnī said: Ismāʿīl al-Ṣaffār fasted eighty-four Ramadans, and he was a follower of the Sunnah. He died in Muḥarram of this year and was buried near the grave of Maʿrūf, with the width of the road between them [before the grave of al-Ādamī and Abū ʿUmar al-Zāhid]. 2534 - Isḥāq b. ʿAbd al-Karīm b. Isḥāq, Abū Yaʿqūb al-Ṣawwāf. He heard from Abū ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Nasāʾī and others. He was a jurist accepted before judges. He died in Shaʿbān of this year. 2535 - Shuʿbah b. al-Faḍl b. Saʿīd b. Salamah, Abū al-Ḥasan al-Thaʿlabī, whose name was Saʿīd but Shuʿbah became predominant over him. He related ḥadīth in Miṣr from Bishr b. Mūsā and Muḥammad b. ʿUthmān b. Abī Shaybah. A group narrated from him, and he was trustworthy. He died in Miṣr in Jumādā al-Ākhirah of this year. And died: Ismāʿīl b. al-Qāʾim b. al-Mahdī, laqab al-Manṣūr al-ʿUbaydī, who claimed he was a Fāṭimid, ruler of the lands of the Maghrib. He was the father of al-Muʿizz, the builder of Cairo, and he himself built al-Manṣūriyyah in the Maghrib. He was courageous, eloquent, and articulate. Abū Jaʿfar al-Marwarūdhī said: I went out with him when he defeated Abū Yazīd the Khārijī, and while I was walking with him, his spear fell. I dismounted and handed it to him, and I tried to amuse him with the poet's verse: She cast down her staff and settled, as the traveler's eye finds rest in returning home. He said: Why did you not say as God Almighty said: “Then it swallowed up what they had fabricated. So the truth was established, and what they were doing was nullified. So they were overcome there and turned back in humiliation” [al-Aʿrāf: 119]. He said: I said to him: You are the son of the daughter of the Messenger of God ﷺ; you spoke according to what you knew, and I spoke according to what my knowledge reached. Ibn Khallikān said: This is similar to what happened to ʿAbd al-Malik b. Marwān when he ordered al-Ḥajjāj to build a gate in Bayt al-Maqdis and write his name on it. He built a gate for him, and he built another gate for himself. A thunderbolt struck the gate of ʿAbd al-Malik and burned it. Al-Ḥajjāj wrote to him from Iraq consoling him for what had grieved him, saying: O Commander of the Faithful, we are only as God Almighty said: “And recite to them the story of the two sons of Adam in truth, when they offered a sacrifice, and it was accepted from one of them and not accepted from the other” [al-Māʾidah: 27]. He said: The caliph was thus consoled. The death of this al-Manṣūr occurred in this year, when he was afflicted by severe cold and died from it.
