✧ Mention of Daysam's flight from Adharbayjan In this year, Daysam b. Ibrahim Abu Salim fled from Adharbayjan, whose conquest by him we have already mentioned. The reason for his flight from it was that Rukn al-Dawlah b. Buwayh had seized one of his commanders, named ʿAli b. Maysakiyy. He escaped from prison and made for al-Jabal, where he gathered a force and went to Wahsudhan, brother of al-Marzuban. He came to an agreement with him, and they assisted one another against Daysam. Then al-Marzuban gained control of the fortress of Sumayram, as we shall mention. His letters reached his brother and ʿAli b. Maysakiyy telling of his release. He wrote to the Daylamites and won them over. Daysam was unaware of his release; he only thought that Wahsudhan and ʿAli b. Maysakiyy were fighting him. Daysam had a vizier known as Abu ʿAbd Allah al-Nuʿaymi. He coveted his wealth and seized him, and he appointed as his secretary a man who used to write for al-Nuʿaymi. Al-Nuʿaymi contrived to agree to everything he sought from him and guaranteed that secretary a sum of money. So Daysam released him and handed over his secretary to him, returning him to his former state. Then Daysam departed, leaving him behind in Ardabil to collect the money he had offered. Al-Nuʿaymi killed that secretary and fled with the money he had to ʿAli b. Maysakiyy. The news reached Daysam when he was near Zanjan, so he returned to Ardabil. The Daylamites rioted against him, so he distributed among them what money he had. News came to him that ʿAli b. Maysakiyy was marching to Ardabil with a small force. He went to meet him, and they met and fought. The Daylamites went over to ʿAli, and Daysam fled to Armenia with a few Kurds. Its kings sent him enough to keep himself going. News reached him that al-Marzuban was marching from the fortress of Sumayram to Ardabil, that he had taken control of Adharbayjan, and that he had sent an army against him. He could not remain, so he fled from Armenia to Baghdad. His arrival was in this year. Muʿizz al-Dawlah met him, honored him, and treated him well. He stayed with him in the most comfortable circumstances. Then his family and companions in Adharbayjan wrote to him summoning him. He left Baghdad in the year 343 [A.H.] and asked Muʿizz al-Dawlah to support him with an army, but he did not do so because al-Marzuban had made peace with Rukn al-Dawlah and married into his family, so Muʿizz al-Dawlah could not oppose Rukn al-Dawlah. Daysam went to Nasir al-Dawlah b. Hamdan in Mosul seeking his aid, but he did not aid him. He went to Sayf al-Dawlah in Syria and stayed with him until the year 344 A.H. It happened that a group at Bab al-Abwab revolted against al-Marzuban, and he marched against them. A leader of the Kurds of Adharbayjan sent to Daysam summoning him to Adharbayjan to help him against its ruler. He went there and took the city of Salmas. Al-Marzuban sent one of his commanders against him, and he fought him. The commander's men sought safe conduct from Daysam, so the commander returned defeated, and Daysam remained in Salmas. When al-Marzuban had dealt with the rebels against him, he returned to Adharbayjan. When he drew near Daysam, Daysam left Salmas and went to Armenia, heading for Ibn al-Dayrani and Ibn Hajiq because he trusted them. Al-Marzuban wrote to Ibn al-Dayrani ordering him to arrest Daysam. He delayed, then arrested him out of fear of al-Marzuban. When he had arrested him, al-Marzuban ordered him to bring him to him. He delayed, then was forced to hand him over. When al-Marzuban received him, he gouged out his eyes and blinded him, then imprisoned him. When al-Marzuban died, one of al-Marzuban's companions killed Daysam out of fear of his mischief.
