Translation

✧ It was reported to Abū Muḥammad al-Ḥusayn b. Muḥammad al-Muhallabī that a man known as al-Baṣrī had died in the City of Peace (Baghdad), and he had been an imam of the ʿAzāqiriyya, the companion of Abū Jaʿfar Muḥammad b. ʿAlī, known as Ibn Abī al-ʿAzāqir. He used to claim that the spirit of Abū Jaʿfar b. Abī al-ʿAzāqir had incarnated in him, and that he had left behind abundant wealth, and that he had companions and trusted followers who believed in his divinity, and that the spirits of the prophets and the truthful ones had incarnated in them. So orders were given to seal his house and arrest this group. Among the group was a young man known as Ibn Harthama who claimed that the spirit of ʿAlī b. Abī Ṭālib had incarnated in him, and a woman called Fāṭima who claimed that the spirit of Fāṭima (peace be upon her) had incarnated in her, and another called Fāṭima al-Ṣughrā [who claimed that the spirit of Fāṭima al-Ṣughrā had incarnated in her], and a servant who claimed [to be] Mīkāʾīl. From them was obtained ten thousand dirhams and goods approaching [the value of] that. [Al-Muhallabī used to call this wealth the wealth of the heretics.] The people were released so that al-Muhallabī would not be accused of deviating from the Shīʿa.
