✧ Mention of Abū ʿAlī’s return to Khurāsān In this year, Abū ʿAlī b. Muḥtāj was restored to the command of the armies in Khurāsān, and was ordered to return to Naysābūr. The reason for this was that Manṣūr b. Qarātakīn had been troubled by the troops and found governing them difficult; they had acted independently in affairs without him and caused corruption in the districts of Naysābūr. His letters kept coming to the emir Nūḥ asking to be relieved of governing them, requesting that he be limited to Herāt, and that Nūḥ appoint over what he held whomever he wished. Nūḥ had been sending to Abū ʿAlī, promising him restoration to his rank. When Manṣūr died, the emir Nūḥ sent robes of honor and the banner to Abū ʿAlī, ordered him to proceed to Naysābūr, granted him al-Rayy as a fief, and commanded him to go there. He departed from al-Ṣaghāniyān in the month of Ramaḍān, leaving his son Abū Manṣūr as his deputy in his place. He reached Marw and stayed there until the affair of Khwārizm arose, as it was vacant, then he proceeded to Naysābūr and arrived there in Dhū al-Ḥijjah and stayed.
