✧ Mention of the war in Sicily between the Muslims and the Byzantines Al-Manṣūr al-ʿAlawī, the ruler of Ifrīqiyah, had appointed over Sicily in the year 336 AH al-Ḥasan b. ʿAlī b. Abī al-Ḥusayn al-Kalbī. He entered it and settled there as we have mentioned, and he raided the Byzantines who were in it in several raids. They sought help from the king of Constantinople, who sent to them a large army. They encamped at Adhranah. Al-Ḥasan b. ʿAlī sent to al-Manṣūr informing him of the situation, and he sent him a numerous army with his servant Faraḥ. Al-Ḥasan gathered his troops together with the arrivals, and marched to Rīyū, and he dispatched raiding parties into the land of Qillawriyah, and al-Ḥasan besieged Jarājah with the severest siege. Its inhabitants were on the verge of destruction from severe thirst, and nothing remained but to take it, when news came to him that the Byzantine army was arriving. So he made a truce with the people of Jarājah for money they would pay, and he marched to the Byzantines. When they heard of his approach, they fled without fighting and abandoned Adhranah. Al-Ḥasan encamped at the fortress of Qisānah and sent out his raiding parties to plunder. The people of Qisānah made peace with him for money, and he continued thus until the month of Dhū al-Ḥijjah. The battle between the Muslims and the army of Constantinople and those with it of the Byzantines in Sicily took place on the night of the Feast of Sacrifice. They fought and the fighting intensified, and the Byzantines were defeated, and the Muslims pursued them, killing and taking captives until nightfall. They seized all their baggage, weapons, and mounts, and sent the heads to the cities of Sicily and Ifrīqiyah. Al-Ḥasan besieged Jarājah, and they made peace with him for money they would bring, and he withdrew from them. He sent a raiding party to the city of Ṭarqūqah, and they conquered it and seized what was in it. Al-Ḥasan remained on the island of Sicily until the year 341 AH, when al-Manṣūr died. He departed from it to Ifrīqiyah and joined al-Muʿizz b. al-Manṣūr, and he left as his deputy over Sicily his son Abū al-Ḥasan Aḥmad.
