Compendium of Accounts of the Earlier Prophets

Translation

✧ Compendium of Accounts of the Earlier Prophets The reports differ regarding the number of the prophets (peace be upon them). Some reports make them eight thousand, and in another report one hundred and twenty-four thousand. The crafts of the prophets (peace be upon them) were diverse. On the authority of Ibn ʿAbbās ؓ, he said: Ādam ﷺ was a plowman, Nūḥ was a carpenter, Idrīs was a tailor, Ṣāliḥ was a merchant, Ibrāhīm was a farmer, and Shuʿayb was a shepherd. Dāwūd was an armorer, Sulaymān was a king, ʿĪsā would hide nothing for his tomorrow, and our Prophet ﷺ used to tend sheep for his family at Ajyād. The people most severely tried are the prophets, then the next best, then the next best. Among the distinctive qualities of the prophets is that they are not inherited from, and whatever they leave is charity. They never supplicate for good except that they supplicate for it for their nation, nor for evil except that they warn them against it. Their religion is one, and it is the religion of Islam, even if the laws differ.
