✧ Mention of the march of al-Marzubān to al-Rayy In this year al-Marzubān Muḥammad b. Musāfir, lord of Adharbayjān, marched to al-Rayy. The reason was that he had heard of the departure of the armies of Khurāsān to al-Rayy, and that this would keep Rukn al-Dawlah occupied and away from him. Then he had sent an envoy to Muʿizz al-Dawlah, and Muʿizz al-Dawlah had shaved his beard and insulted him and insulted his master; he was a fool, and that weighed heavily on al-Marzubān. He set about gathering armies, and afterwards some of the commanders of Rukn al-Dawlah sought safety with him and made him covet al-Rayy, telling him that the commanders behind him wanted him. So he became eager for that. Nāṣir al-Dawlah corresponded with him, promising assistance and advising him to begin with Baghdādh, but he disagreed. Then he summoned his father and his brother Wahsūdhān and consulted them about that. His father forbade him to aim for al-Rayy, but he would not accept. When he bade him farewell, his father wept and said: "My son, where shall I seek you after this day?" He said: "Either in the house of the emirate at al-Rayy, or among the slain." When Rukn al-Dawlah learned of this, he wrote to his two brothers ʿImād al-Dawlah and Muʿizz al-Dawlah seeking reinforcements. ʿImād al-Dawlah sent two thousand horsemen, and Muʿizz al-Dawlah sent an army with Subuktikīn al-Turkī, and he dispatched a charter from al-Muṭīʿ li-llāh to Rukn al-Dawlah for Khurāsān. When they were at al-Dīnawar, the Daylamites rebelled against Subuktikīn and fell upon him by night. He mounted a relay horse and escaped, and the Turks gathered around him. The Daylamites saw that they had no strength against him, so they returned to him and implored him, and he accepted their excuse. Rukn al-Dawlah had meanwhile begun dealing with al-Marzubān by deception and trickery. He wrote to him humbling himself and magnifying him, asking him to turn away on the condition that Rukn al-Dawlah hand over Zanjān, Abhar, and Qazwīn to him. Envoys went back and forth about that until the reinforcements from ʿImād al-Dawlah and Muʿizz al-Dawlah reached him, and he brought with him Muḥammad b. ʿAbd al-Razzāq. Al-Ḥasan b. al-Fayrūzān sent him an army with Muḥammad b. Mākān. When his gathered force became large, he arrested a group of his commanders whom he suspected and marched to Qazwīn. Al-Marzubān realized he was unable to face him and was too proud to retreat. They met, and al-Marzubān's army was routed. He was taken prisoner and carried to Sumayram, where he was imprisoned. Rukn al-Dawlah returned, and Muḥammad b. ʿAbd al-Razzāq encamped in the districts of Adharbayjān. As for al-Marzubān's followers, they gathered around his father Muḥammad b. Musāfir and made him their leader. His son Wahsūdhān fled from him to one of his fortresses. Muḥammad treated the army badly, and they wanted to kill him, so he fled to his son Wahsūdhān, who seized him and kept him confined until he died. Then Wahsūdhān was perplexed about his situation, so he summoned Daysam al-Kurdī because of the Kurds' obedience to him, strengthened him, and sent him against Muḥammad b. ʿAbd al-Razzāq. They met, Daysam was defeated, and Ibn ʿAbd al-Razzāq grew strong. He stayed in the districts of Adharbayjān collecting its revenues. Then he returned to al-Rayy in the year 338, wrote to the emir Nūḥ, sent him a gift, and asked for pardon. He accepted his excuse and wrote to Washmakīr about making peace with him, and he made peace. Then Muḥammad returned to Ṭūs in the year 339 when Manṣūr went out to al-Rayy.
