He was born on the eighteenth night of Rabīʿ al-Awwal in the year 256 AH. He heard from his grandfather Muḥammad b. ʿUbayd Allāh, Muḥammad b. Isḥāq al-Ṣāghānī, al-ʿAbbās b. Muḥammad al-Dūrī, and many others. He was thiqah (trustworthy), amīn (reliable), thabt (precise), ṣadūq (truthful), waraʿ (pious), and a ḥujjah (authority). He compiled many books and gathered abundant sciences, but people heard only the least of his works because of his harsh character. A group narrated from him, the last of whom was Muḥammad b. Fāris al-Ghūrī. Abū al-Faḍl ʿUbayd Allāh b. Aḥmad al-Ṣayrafī said: Abū al-Ḥusayn b. al-Munādī was firm in religion, firm in method, harsh in character, and for that reason transmission did not spread from him. He said: Abū al-Ḥasan b. al-Ṣalt said to me: We used to go with Ibn Qāḥ al-Warrāq to Abū al-Ḥusayn b. al-Munādī to hear from him. When we stood at his door, a slave girl of his would come out to us and say: How many are you? We would tell her our number, and permission would be given to us to enter, and he would narrate to us. Once a man from the ʿAlawīs and his servant attended. When we asked permission, the girl said: How many are you? We said: [About] thirteen. We had not counted the ʿAlawī or his servant in the number. We entered upon him, and when he saw us as fifteen persons, he said to us: Leave today; I will not narrate to you. We left and thought that some business had occurred to him. Then we returned to him a second session, and he dismissed us and did not narrate to us. Afterwards we asked him about the reason that necessitated his refusal to narrate to us. He said: You used to mention your number to the girl each time and be truthful; then you lied the last time. Whoever lies in this amount is not safe from lying in what is more than it. He said: We apologized to him and said: We will be careful in the future, so narrate to us. Or something like that. I copied from the handwriting of Abū Yūsuf al-Qazwīnī: Abū al-Ḥusayn b. al-Munādī was among the excellent Qurʾān reciters and among the major ḥadīth scholars. He has in the sciences of the Qurʾān four hundred and forty-some books, of which I know twenty-one or fewer, and I have heard of the rest. He was among the compilers, and we find nothing of padding in his speech; rather his speech is pure, and he combined transmission and understanding. The compiler said: A portion of his works in his own handwriting came to me, and in them are benefits that are hardly found in any book. Whoever reflects on his works knows the stature of the man. He died in Muḥarram of this year and was buried in the cemetery of al-Khayzurān. 2494 - [Aḥmad b. Ibrāhīm b. ʿAbd Allāh b. Muʿāwiyah, Abū al-Ḥasan. He narrated from Aḥmad b. Ḥammād, and he was thiqah, righteous. He died in Ramaḍān of this year. 2495 - Aḥmad b. al-Ḥusayn Mānāj, Abū al-ʿAbbās al-Iṣṭakhrī al-Fārisī. He was a righteous, ascetic man. He narrated ḥadīth and dictated it. He died in Egypt in Rabīʿ al-Ākhir of this year]. 2496 - Rayṭah bt. ʿUbayd Allāh, the worshipper. She accompanied Abū ʿUthmān al-Naysābūrī and his peers, memorized from their speech, and prayed until she became unable to walk. The shaykhs of the ascetics used to visit her. She died in Muḥarram of this year. 2497 - ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿUmar b. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. ʿAbd al-Ḥamīd b. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Zayd b. al-Khaṭṭāb, [Abū ʿUmar], and it is said: Abū Muḥammad al-Khaṭṭābī. He narrated from al-Darāwardī. Abū Bakr al-Athram and al-Baghawī narrated from him, and he was thiqah. He died in Rabīʿ al-Ākhir [in al-Baṣrah in] this year. 2498 - ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Muḥammad b. ʿUbayd Allāh b. Saʿd, Abū Muḥammad al-Zuhrī: He was born in the year 257 AH and heard ʿAbbās al-Dūrī. Ibn Shāhīn narrated from him, and he was thiqah. He died in Rabīʿ al-Ākhir of this year. 2499 - Muḥammad b. Aḥmad b. Aḥmad b. Ḥammād, Abū al-ʿAbbās b. al-Athram al-Muqrī: Thus al-Dāraquṭnī, al-Muḥsin b. ʿAlī al-Tanūkhī, and Abū ʿUmar al-Hāshimī gave his lineage. Abū Bakr b. Shādhān used to drop his grandfather Aḥmad and make Ḥammād the grandfather. He was born in the year 240 AH, heard al-Ḥasan b. ʿArafah, ʿAlī b. Ḥarb, and ʿAbbās al-Dūrī. People wrote from him by the selection of ʿUmar al-Baṣrī. Muḥammad b. al-Muẓaffar, al-Dāraquṭnī, and others narrated from him. He was thiqah and died in this year. 2500 - Muḥammad b. Aḥmad Ibrāhīm b. Quraysh b. Ḥāzim b. Ṣubayḥ, Abū ʿAbd Allāh al-Kātib, known as al-Ḥakīmī. He was born in Dhū al-Qaʿdah in the year 252 AH, and heard Zakariyyā b. Yaḥyā b. Asad al-Marwazī, Muḥammad b. Isḥāq al-Ṣāghānī, and al-ʿAbbās b. Muḥammad al-Dūrī among others. Al-Dāraquṭnī, Abū ʿUmar b. Ḥayyawayh, and others narrated from him. Al-Barqānī said: He is thiqah, except that he narrates rejected reports. Al-Khaṭīb said: I read in the handwriting of Abū al-Ḥasan b. al-Furāt: al-Ḥakīmī died on Thursday, twelve nights remaining of Dhū al-Ḥijjah in the year 336 AH, and was buried on Friday. 2501 - Muḥammad b. Yaḥyā b. ʿAbd Allāh b. al-ʿAbbās b. Muḥammad b. Ṣūl, Abū Bakr al-Ṣūlī: He was one of the scholars of the arts of literature, with good knowledge of the reports of kings, the days of the caliphs, the virtues of the nobles, and the classes of poets. He narrated from Abū Dāwūd al-Sijistānī, Thaʿlab, al-Mubarrad, Abū al-ʿAynāʾ, al-Kudaymī, Abū Ruwayq, and many others. He had extensive transmission, good memorization, and was skilled in compiling books. He had a great house filled with books, and he used to say: All these books are from my own hearing. He was a boon companion to a group of caliphs and compiled their biographies. He had good ancestry, for his grandfather Ṣūl and his family were kings of Jurjān. Then the descendants of Ṣūl rose to prominence in the secretarial profession and assumed governmental offices. Abū Bakr had sound belief, an excellent way, and good poetry. Ibn Ḥayyawayh, [Abū al-Ḥasan] al-Dāraquṭnī, and others narrated from him. Abū Bakr al-Ṣūlī recited for himself: I loved for his sake whoever resembled him; and everything of the beloved is beloved. Until I imitated with my body what is in his eye; As if my illness were stolen from his eyelids. And among his poems: He complained to you what he found; the one whose endurance betrayed him in you. Sighing, if you wish he complains; thirsty, if you wish he comes to water. Passionate, when he seeks sleep; the burning of grief wakes him. O gazelle whose two eyes; fell the lion. Are not your captives to be ransomed? Is there no retaliation for your slain? What would it cost the one who tyrannized in; his judgments if he were moderate? It would not harm him if he; fulfilled what he promised. My sleeplessness became easy for him; in his love when he slept. Alas for a naïve one whom; our connection and rejection deceived. In his two eyes is a dark-eyed beauty; and his stature has tenderness. And Abū Bakr al-Ṣūlī said: I attended the gate of ʿAlī b. ʿĪsā the vizier, and with us was a group of the eminent secretaries. I brought forward an inkwell and wrote: I was left at the gate of Ibn ʿĪsā as if I were; “Stop, let us weep in memory of a beloved and a dwelling.” When I come to complain of my long poverty and need; they say: “Do not perish of grief; be patient.” The tears of my eyes overflowed at the ugliness of their rejection; onto my chest until my tears soaked my saddle-cloth. My returning and my seeking them have gone on too long; is there at a faded trace any recourse? The news reached him, so he summoned me and said: O Ṣūlī, “Is there at a faded trace any recourse?” I felt ashamed and said: May God support the vizier; nothing remains, and I am as you see. So he ordered for me five thousand [dirhams], and I took them and left. Abū Bakr al-Ṣūlī left Baghdad because of straightened circumstances, and he died in al-Baṣrah in this year. 2502 - The daughter of Abū al-Ḥasan al-Makkī: ʿUbayd Allāh b. Aḥmad b. Bukayr said: Abū al-Ḥasan al-Makkī had a daughter residing in Makkah who was more scrupulous than him. She used to subsist only on thirty dirhams that her father sent to her every year from what he retained from [the price of] the palm leaves he wove and sold. Ibn al-Rawwās al-Tammār, who was his neighbor, informed me: I came to him to bid him farewell for the pilgrimage, to ask about his needs, and to request that he pray for me. He handed me a paper and said: Ask in Makkah in such-and-such a place about so-and-so, and deliver this to her. I knew that she was his daughter. I took the paper and went, and I asked about her and found her more famous for worship and asceticism than to be hidden. My soul desired that something from my own money reach her, for which I would have reward, but I knew that if I gave it to her she would not accept it. So I opened the paper, made the thirty dirhams fifty, folded it as it was, and delivered it to her. She said: What news of my father? I said: He is well. She said: Has he mixed with the people of this world and abandoned devotion to God Almighty? I said: No. She said: I ask you about something—will you be truthful to me by God and by Him to whom you made pilgrimage [if I ask you about something and you tell me the truth]? I said: Yes. She said: Did you mix [into] these dirhams something from yourself? I said: Yes. How did you know this? She said: My father never increased me beyond the thirty dirhams, because his condition does not allow more than that, unless he abandoned worship. If you had told me that, I would also not have taken anything from him. Then she said to me: Take all of it, for you have disobeyed me in what you thought was kindness to me, and I will not take anything from money whose source I do not know. I said: Take thirty dirhams from it [as your father sent you, and return the rest]. She said: If I could recognize them by their very coins among the dirhams, I would take them, but they have become mixed with what I do not know its source, so I will take nothing from them! And now I will subsist until the next season from the garbage dumps, because this was my food for the whole year. You have made me hungry. Were it not that you did not intend to harm me, I would pray against you. He said: I was distressed and went down to al-Baṣrah, and came to Abū al-Ḥasan and told him [and apologized to him]. He said: I will not take them, as they have been mixed with other than my money, and you have disobeyed me and her. He said: I said: What shall I do with the dirhams? He said: I do not know. For a long time I kept apologizing to him and asking him what to do with the dirhams. After a while he said to me: Give them in charity. So I did. In this year also died Salāmah al-Ṭūlūnī, who had been chamberlain of the caliphs. His money and family were seized, and he went to Syria in the days of al-Mustakfī and died there. When he left Baghdādh, his money was taken on the road, and he died (now), so his blessing and his soul went where he thought safety lay. How well the poet said: When you fear from events something decreed; and you flee from it, then toward it you advance.
