✧ Mention of the deposition of al-Mustakfī bi’llāh In this year, al-Mustakfī bi’llāh was deposed with eight nights remaining of Jumādā al-Ākhirah. The reason for that was that ʿAlam the stewardess held a banquet, which was attended by a group of Daylamī and Turkish commanders. Muʿizz al-Dawlah suspected her of doing that in order to secure their allegiance to al-Mustakfī and remove Muʿizz al-Dawlah. His suspicion of her worsened when he saw ʿAlam’s boldness. Asfahadūst came before Muʿizz al-Dawlah and said: “The caliph has corresponded with me about meeting him in disguise.” When twenty-two days of Jumādā al-Ākhirah had passed, Muʿizz al-Dawlah and the people were present before the caliph, and the envoy of the ruler of Khurāsān attended. Muʿizz al-Dawlah was seated. Then two men from among the Daylamī nuqabāʾ entered, shouting. They took hold of al-Mustakfī bi’llāh’s hand. He thought they intended to kiss it, so he extended it to them, but they pulled him from his throne and put his turban around his neck. Muʿizz al-Dawlah rose, the people became agitated, and property was plundered. The two Daylamīs drove al-Mustakfī bi’llāh on foot to the residence of Muʿizz al-Dawlah, where he was imprisoned. The palace of the caliphate was looted until nothing remained in it. Abū Aḥmad al-Shīrāzī, al-Mustakfī’s secretary, was arrested, and ʿAlam the stewardess was seized and her tongue was cut out. The duration of al-Mustakfī’s caliphate was one year and four months. Throughout it, he remained overpowered in his affairs by Tūzūn and Ibn Shīrzād. When al-Muṭīʿ li’llāh received the oath of allegiance, al-Mustakfī was handed over to him, and he had his eyes put out and blinded him. He remained imprisoned until he died in Rabīʿ al-Awwal of the year 338 AH. He was born on the thirteenth of Ṣafar in the year 296 AH. His mother was an umm walad named Ghuṣn. He was fair-skinned, handsome of face, with grey hair appearing.
