Translation

✧ Mention of Muʿizz al-Dawlah’s seizure of Baghdād When Yanāl Kūshah corresponded with Muʿizz al-Dawlah b. Buwayh while he was at al-Ahwāz, and entered into obedience to him, Muʿizz al-Dawlah set out toward him. The people in Baghdād became agitated. When he reached Bājisrā, al-Mustakfī bi-Llāh and Ibn Shīrzād went into hiding. His emirate had lasted three months and twenty days. When he concealed himself, the Turks went to al-Mawṣil. When they had gone far away, al-Mustakfī appeared and returned to Baghdād to the caliphal palace. Abū Muḥammad al-Ḥasan b. Muḥammad al-Muhallabī, the companion of Muʿizz al-Dawlah, arrived in Baghdād. He met with Ibn Shīrzād in the place where he had hidden, then met with al-Mustakfī. Al-Mustakfī expressed joy at the coming of Muʿizz al-Dawlah and informed him that he had only hidden from the Turks so that they would disperse and the matter would fall to Muʿizz al-Dawlah without fighting. Muʿizz al-Dawlah reached Baghdād on the eleventh of Jumādā al-Ūlā. He encamped at Bāb al-Shammāsiyyah, and the following day entered to see the caliph al-Mustakfī and pledged allegiance to him. Al-Mustakfī swore an oath to him. Muʿizz al-Dawlah asked him to permit Ibn Shīrzād to appear and to permit him to make him his secretary. He acceded to that. Ibn Shīrzād appeared and met Muʿizz al-Dawlah. He appointed him over the land tax and collection of revenues. The caliph bestowed a robe of honor on Muʿizz al-Dawlah and on that day gave him the title "Muʿizz al-Dawlah," gave his brother ʿAlī the title "ʿImād al-Dawlah," and gave his brother al-Ḥasan the title "Rukn al-Dawlah." He ordered that their titles and kunyahs be struck on the dinars and dirhams. Muʿizz al-Dawlah lodged in the palace of Muʾnis, and his companions lodged in the people’s houses. The people suffered great hardship from that, and it became a customary imposition upon them thereafter. He was the first to do this in Baghdād, and it was not known there before him. Al-Mustakfī bi-Llāh was allotted every day five thousand dirhams for his expenses, and it sometimes was delayed from him. Along with that, estates were confirmed for him and delivered to him, which his secretary Abū Aḥmad al-Shīrāzī administered.
