ذِكْرُ مَسِيرِ أَبِي عَلِيٍّ إِلَى الرَّيِّ وَعَوْدِهِ قَبْلَ مِلْكِهَا لَمَّا اسْتَقَرَّ الْأَمِيرُ نُوحٌ فِي وَلَايَتِهِ ( بِمَا وَرَاءَ النَّهْرِ وَخُرَاسَانَ )، أَمَرَ أَبَا عَلِيِّ بْنَ مُحْتَاجٍ أَنْ يَسِيرَ فِي عَسَاكِرِ خُرَاسَانَ إِلَى الرَّيِّ وَيَسْتَنْقِذَهَا مِنْ يَدِ رُكْنِ الدَّوْلَةِ بْنِ بُوَيْهِ، فَسَارَ فِي جَمْعٍ كَثِيرٍ، فَلَقِيَهُ وَشْمَكِيرُ بِخُرَاسَانَ وَهُوَ يَقْصِدُ الْأَمِيرَ نُوحًا، فَسَيَّرَهُ إِلَيْهِ، وَكَانَ نُوحٌ حِينَئِذٍ بِمَرْوَ، فَلَمَّا قَدِمَ عَلَيْهِ أَكْرَمَهُ وَأَنْزَلَهُ، وَبَالَغَ فِي إِكْرَامِهِ وَالْإِحْسَانِ إِلَيْهِ. وَأَمَّا أَبُو عَلِيٍّ فَإِنَّهُ سَارَ نَحْوَ الرَّيِّ، فَلَمَّا نَزَلَ بِبِسْطَامَ خَالَفَ عَلَيْهِ بَعْضُ مَنْ مَعَهُ، وَعَادُوا عَنْهُ مَعَ مَنْصُورِ بْنِ قَرَاتَكِينَ، وَهُوَ مِنْ أَكَابِرِ أَصْحَابِ نُوحٍ وَخَوَاصِّهِ، فَسَارُوا نَحْوَ جُرْجَانَ، وَبِهَا الْحَسَنُ بْنُ الْفَيْرُزَانِ، فَصَدَّهُمُ الْحَسَنُ عَنْهَا، فَانْصَرَفُوا إِلَى نَيْسَابُورَ، وَسَارَ أَبُو عَلِيٍّ ( نَحْوَ الرَّيِّ ) فِيمَنْ بَقِيَ مَعَهُ، فَخَرَجَ إِلَيْهِ رُكْنُ الدَّوْلَةِ مُحَارِبًا، فَالْتَقَوْا عَلَى ثَلَاثَةِ فَرَاسِخَ مِنَ الرَّيِّ، وَكَانَ مَعَ أَبِي عَلِيٍّ جَمَاعَةٌ كَثِيرَةٌ مِنَ الْأَكْرَادِ، فَغَدَرُوا بِهِ، وَاسْتَأْمَنُوا إِلَى رُكْنِ الدَّوْلَةِ، فَانْهَزَمَ أَبُو عَلِيٍّ، وَعَادَ نَحْوَ نَيْسَابُورَ وَغَنِمُوا بَعْضَ أَثْقَالِهِ.
Translation
✧ Mention of the march of Abū ʿAlī to al-Rayy and his return before conquering it When the emir Nūḥ had become established in his authority (over Transoxania and Khurasan), he commanded Abū ʿAlī b. Muḥtāj to march with the armies of Khurasan to al-Rayy and to wrest it from the hand of Rukn al-Dawlah b. Buwayh. He set out with a large host. Washmakīr met him in Khurasan while he was making for the emir Nūḥ, so he sent him on to him. Nūḥ was then in Marw. When he arrived before him, he honoured him, lodged him, and went to great lengths in honouring him and showing kindness to him. As for Abū ʿAlī, he marched toward al-Rayy. When he encamped at Bisṭām, some of those with him turned against him and went away from him with Manṣūr b. Qarātakīn, who was one of the chief companions of Nūḥ and among his close associates. They marched toward Jurjān, where al-Ḥasan b. al-Fayrūzān was. Al-Ḥasan repelled them from it, so they turned away to Naysābūr. Abū ʿAlī marched (toward al-Rayy) with those who remained with him. Rukn al-Dawlah came out to fight him, and they met at three parasangs from al-Rayy. Abū ʿAlī had with him a large group of Kurds, and they betrayed him and sought safety with Rukn al-Dawlah. Abū ʿAlī was defeated and returned toward Naysābūr, and they captured some of his baggage.
