✧ Mention of the death of Abū ʿAbd Allāh al-Barīdī In it, in Shawwāl, Abū ʿAbd Allāh al-Barīdī died after having killed his brother eight months earlier, of an acute fever. After him, his brother Abū al-Ḥusayn took charge of the affair, but he treated the troops badly, so they rose against him to kill him and to put Abū al-Qāsim, the son of his brother Abū ʿAbd Allāh, in his place. He fled from them to Hajar and sought protection with the Qarāmiṭa, who helped him. Brothers of Abū Ṭāhir al-Qurmuṭī marched with him in an army to al-Baṣrah, but they saw that Abū al-Qāsim had secured it, so they turned them back from it. They besieged him for a while, then grew weary and made peace between him and his uncle, and they returned. Abū al-Ḥusayn entered al-Baṣrah, prepared himself there, and marched to Baghdādh, where he entered upon Tūzūn. Then Yaʾnas, the mawlā of Abū ʿAbd Allāh al-Barīdī, coveted advancement. He conspired with a commander of the Daylamite troops that leadership should be shared between them and that they should remove Abū al-Qāsim, his master. The Daylamites gathered at that commander's place, and Abū al-Qāsim sent Yaʾnas to them, unaware of the matter. When Yaʾnas came to them, he advised them to hold back, so that Daylamite commander coveted him and desired to be alone in leadership. He was ordered to be struck, and he was struck with a zūbīn in his back and wounded. Yaʾnas fled and hid. Then the Daylamites' unity broke apart, and they dispersed. That commander hid, but he was seized and exiled. Abū al-Qāsim al-Barīdī ordered that Yaʾnas be treated, for his condition had become apparent to him. He was treated until he recovered. Then Abū al-Qāsim arrested him after more than forty days, confiscated from him one hundred thousand dinars, and killed him. The affair of Abū al-Qāsim remained stable until the command of God came to him, as we shall mention.
