✧ Mention of the Killing of Abū Yūsuf al-Barīdī In this year, Abū ʿAbd Allāh al-Barīdī killed his brother Abū Yūsuf. The reason for his killing was that Abū ʿAbd Allāh al-Barīdī had spent the money he had in fighting the Banū Ḥamdān and their stay at Wāsiṭ, and in fighting Tūzūn. When his troops saw the scarcity of his money, they inclined toward his brother Abū Yūsuf because of his abundant wealth. Abū ʿAbd Allāh borrowed from his brother Abū Yūsuf time after time, and he would give him little money, while finding fault with him and mentioning his wastefulness, his poor management, his madness, and his recklessness. This became confirmed in Abū ʿAbd Allāh's mind. Then it also became confirmed to him that he intended to seize him as well, and to take sole control of affairs. So each of them became wary of the other. Then Abū ʿAbd Allāh sent to his brother precious jewels that Bujkam had given to his daughter when al-Barīdī married her, and which he had taken from the caliphal palace; Abū ʿAbd Allāh had taken them from her when he married her. When the messenger came to him, conveyed that, and presented the jewels to him, he summoned the jewelers to appraise them. When they began describing them, he rejected their appraisal, became angry, reduced their value to fifty thousand dirhams, and began to disparage his brother Abū ʿAbd Allāh, mentioning his faults and the wealth that had come to him. He sent fifty thousand dirhams with the messenger. When the messenger returned to Abū ʿAbd Allāh and conveyed that to him, his eyes filled with tears, and he said: "Did you not say to him: 'My madness and my lack of prudence have seated you in this position and made you like Korah'?" Then he enumerated the kindness he had shown him. A few days later, he stationed his servants in a covered passage between his house and the riverbank. His brother Abū Yūsuf came from the riverbank and entered that passage. They rose against him and killed him while he cried out: "O my brother, O my brother, they are killing me!" His brother heard him and said: "To the curse of God!" Then their brother Abū al-Ḥusayn came out of his house, which was next to the house of his brother Abū ʿAbd Allāh, shouting for help: "O my brother, you have killed him!" He insulted him and threatened him, so he fell silent. When he was killed, he buried him. The news reached the troops, and they rose up and rioted, thinking that he was alive. He ordered him to be exhumed and thrown onto the road. When they saw him, they fell silent. He ordered him to be buried again. Abū ʿAbd Allāh moved to the house of his brother Abū Yūsuf and took what was in it, including the jewels. He did not obtain much of his brother's wealth, for most of it was tied up in debts owed by people, and his brother's life was gone.
