✧ Mention of Muʿizz al-Dawlah’s arrival at Wāsiṭ and Diyālī and his return In this year, Muʿizz al-Dawlah Abū al-Ḥusayn b. Būyah learned that Tūzūn had gone up to al-Mawṣil, so he marched to Wāsiṭ for an appointment with the Barīdīs, who had promised him that they would reinforce him with an army on the water, but they broke their promise. Tūzūn returned from al-Mawṣil to Baghdādh, and then went down from it to meet Muʿizz al-Dawlah. They met on the seventeenth of Dhū al-Qaʿdah at Qibāb Ḥumayd. The fighting between them lasted for more than ten days, except that Tūzūn’s men were falling back while the Daylam advanced, until Tūzūn crossed the Diyālī River and stood on it, preventing the Daylam from crossing. Tūzūn had with him ships on the Tigris, and they wished that the Daylam would seize their edges. Ibn Būyah saw fit to go up along the Diyālī in order to move away from the Tigris and from fighting those on it, and to gain control of the water. Tūzūn learned of that, so he sent some of his men, and they crossed the Diyālī and lay in ambush. When Muʿizz al-Dawlah marched upward and his baggage train followed in his track, the ambush came out against him and came between the two, falling upon the army while it was not in battle formation. Tūzūn heard the shouting, so he hastened and most of his men crossed by swimming, and they fell upon Ibn Būyah’s army, killing and taking captives until they grew weary. Ibn Būyah and his vizier al-Ṣaymarī fled to al-Sūs on the fourth of Dhū al-Ḥijjah, and those of his army who survived joined him. Fourteen commanders of theirs had been captured, among them Ibn al-Dāʿī al-ʿAlawī, and many of the Daylam sought safety with Tūzūn. Then Tūzūn was again afflicted by the seizures that used to seize him, and he became occupied with himself rather than with Muʿizz al-Dawlah, and he returned to Baghdādh.
