✧ Mention of al-Muttaqī's march to al-Mawṣil In this year al-Muttaqī Lillāh was taken up to al-Mawṣil. The reason for that was what we have mentioned first regarding the calumny of Ibn Muqlah and the interpreter against al-Muttaqī with Tūzūn and Ibn Shīrzād. Then Ibn Shīrzād arrived in Baghdādh on the fifth of al-Muḥarram with three hundred ghulāms riding light horses, so al-Muttaqī's fear increased, and he stayed in Baghdādh commanding and forbidding, without referring back to al-Muttaqī in anything. Al-Muttaqī had sent to Nāṣir al-Dawlah b. Ḥamdān requesting that he send an army to him to accompany him to al-Mawṣil, so he sent them with his cousin Abū ʿAbd Allāh al-Ḥusayn b. Saʿīd b. Ḥamdān. When they reached Baghdādh they encamped at Bāb Ḥarb, and Ibn Shīrzād went into hiding. Al-Muttaqī went out to them with his women, his family, his wazīr, and the notables of Baghdādh, such as Salāmah al-Ṭūlūnī, Abū Zakariyyāʾ Yaḥyā b. Saʿīd al-Sūsī, Abū Muḥammad al-Māradānī, Abū Isḥāq al-Qarārīṭī, Abū ʿAbd Allāh al-Mūsawī, Thābit b. Sinān b. Thābit b. Qurrah the physician, Abū Naṣr Muḥammad b. Yanāl the interpreter, and others. When al-Muttaqī departed from Baghdādh, Ibn Shīrzād wronged the people, treated them harshly, and confiscated their property. He sent to Tūzūn, who was in Wāsiṭ, informing him of that. When the news reached Tūzūn, he concluded the tax-farming contract of Wāsiṭ with al-Barīdī and gave him his daughter in marriage. He then marched to Baghdādh. Sayf al-Dawlah went down alone to al-Muttaqī Lillāh at Takrīt. Al-Muttaqī sent to Nāṣir al-Dawlah summoning him, saying to him: 'The condition with you was only that you should come down to us.' So he came down and reached Takrīt on the twenty-first of Rabīʿ al-Ākhir. Al-Muttaqī rode to him, met him in person, and honored him. The caliph went up to al-Mawṣil, and Nāṣir al-Dawlah stayed at Takrīt. Tūzūn marched toward Takrīt, and he and Sayf al-Dawlah b. Ḥamdān met below Takrīt at two farsakhs. They fought for three days, then Sayf al-Dawlah was defeated on Wednesday, three nights remaining of Rabīʿ al-Ākhir. Tūzūn and the Bedouins seized as booty his baggage and the baggage of his brother Nāṣir al-Dawlah, and the two of them returned from Takrīt to al-Mawṣil, with al-Muttaqī Lillāh accompanying them. Tūzūn's followers mutinied, so he returned to Baghdādh, and Sayf al-Dawlah returned and went down, and he and Tūzūn met at Ḥarbā in Shaʿbān. Sayf al-Dawlah was defeated a second time, and Tūzūn pursued him. When Sayf al-Dawlah reached al-Mawṣil, he, his brother Nāṣir al-Dawlah, al-Muttaqī Lillāh, and those with them departed from it to Naṣībīn. Tūzūn entered al-Mawṣil. Al-Muttaqī then went to al-Raqqah, and Sayf al-Dawlah joined him. Al-Muttaqī sent to Tūzūn saying that he felt estranged from him because of his connection with al-Barīdī, and that the two of them had become one hand. If he desired his satisfaction, he should make peace with Sayf al-Dawlah and Nāṣir al-Dawlah so that he might return to Baghdādh. Abū ʿAbd Allāh Muḥammad b. Abī Mūsā al-Hāshimī went back and forth between al-Mawṣil and Tūzūn concerning that, and the peace was concluded. The tax-farming contract was concluded with Nāṣir al-Dawlah for the lands in his possession for three years, each year for three million six hundred thousand dirhams. Tūzūn returned to Baghdādh, and al-Muttaqī stayed with the Banū Ḥamdān at al-Mawṣil. Then they departed from it to al-Raqqah and stayed there.
