✧ Mention of the death of al-Saʿīd Naṣr b. Aḥmad b. Ismāʿīl In this year al-Saʿīd Naṣr b. Aḥmad b. Ismāʿīl, lord of Khurasan and Transoxiana, died (in Rajab). His illness was consumption, and he remained ill for thirteen months. None of the elders of their state remained, for they had denounced one another, so some had perished and some had died. His reign was thirty years (and thirty-three days, and his age was thirty-eight years). He was forbearing, generous, and intelligent. An example of his forbearance is that a servant stole a precious jewel and sold it to a merchant for thirteen thousand dirhams. The merchant came to al-Saʿīd and informed him that he had bought a precious jewel suitable only for the sultan, and he brought the jewel before him. When he saw it, he recognized it as his own that had been stolen. He asked him its price and from whom he had bought it, and the merchant mentioned the servant and the price. He ordered that its price be brought immediately, and he gave him a profit of two thousand dirhams in addition. Then the merchant asked him for the servant's blood. He said: "He must be disciplined. As for his blood, it is yours." He had him brought and disciplined him, then sent him to the merchant and said: "We had granted you his blood, so we have sent him to you. If the owner of the jewel had been one of the subjects, he would have said: 'This is my property returned to me; take your money from the one to whom you handed it over.'" It is related that he reviewed his troops, and among them was a man named Naṣr b. Aḥmad. When the review reached him, he asked him his name, and he fell silent. He repeated the question, but he did not answer. One of those present said: "His name is Naṣr b. Aḥmad, and he was silent out of reverence for the emir." Al-Saʿīd said: "Then his due is incumbent, and we shall increase his stipend." He then brought him near and increased his allowances. It is related of him that when his brother Abū Zakariyyāʾ rebelled against him, he plundered his treasuries and wealth. When al-Saʿīd returned to his kingdom, he was told about a group who had looted his property, but he did not confront them. They told him that a commoner had bought from among the loot a precious knife for two hundred dirhams. He sent for him and gave him two hundred dirhams and asked for the knife. The man refused to sell it except for a thousand dirhams. Al-Saʿīd said: "Do you not wonder at this? I see my property in his possession, yet I have not punished him, and I gave him his due, and he has gone too far in his demand." Then he ordered that he be satisfied. It is related that his illness lasted long, and he remained with it for thirteen months. He turned to prayer and worship, and he built for himself in his palace a chamber which he called the house of worship. He used to wear clean clothes and walk to it barefoot, pray in it, supplicate and humble himself, and avoid abominations and sins until he died and was buried beside his father.
