✧ Mention of the estrangement between al-Muttaqī li-ʾllāh and Tūzūn Muḥammad b. Yanāl al-Turjumān was one of the greatest commanders of Tūzūn, and he was his deputy in Baghdādh. When Tūzūn went down to Wāsiṭ, Muḥammad was slandered to him and his reputation was maligned before him. That reached Muḥammad, so he became averse to him. Now the vizier Abū al-Ḥusayn b. Muqlah had undertaken the farming of the villages in Baghdādh that were reserved for Tūzūn, and he lost in them a large sum, so he feared being held accountable for it. To this was added the connection of Ibn Shīrzād with Tūzūn, so the vizier and others feared him, and they thought that his going over to Tūzūn was by agreement with al-Barīdī. Al-Turjumān and Ibn Muqlah therefore agreed and wrote to Ibn Ḥamdān to send a small force in the company of al-Muttaqī li-ʾllāh to him. They said to al-Muttaqī: 'You have seen what al-Barīdī did to you yesterday: he took from you five hundred thousand dinars, and you spent the like of it on the troops. Al-Barīdī has also guaranteed you to Tūzūn for another five hundred thousand dinars, claiming that they are in your hands from the estate of Bujkam. And Ibn Shīrzād is on his way to seize you, depose you, and deliver you to al-Barīdī.' At this he was alarmed and resolved to go up to Ibn Ḥamdān. Ibn Shīrzād arrived with three hundred men as a light cavalry force.
