✧ Account of the state of the Turks after the ascent of Sayf al-Dawlah When Sayf al-Dawlah fled from Wāsiṭ, the Turks returned to their camp, and discord occurred between Tūzūn and Khajkhaj, and they disputed the emirate. Then the situation settled on Tūzūn being emir and Khajkhaj commander of the army, and they became related by marriage. The Barīdī coveted Wāsiṭ, so he ascended to it. Tūzūn ordered Khajkhaj to march to Nahr Abān, and the Barīdī sent to Tūzūn requesting that he grant him Wāsiṭ as a tax farm. He replied with a courteous refusal and did not do it. When the messenger returned, Tūzūn sent a spy after him to bring him news of his meeting with Khajkhaj. The spy returned and informed Tūzūn that the messenger had met with Khajkhaj and the conversation between them was lengthy, and that Khajkhaj intended to go over to the Barīdī. So Tūzūn rode to him swiftly with two hundred ghulāms whom he trusted, and raided him in his bed on the night of the twelfth of Ramaḍān. When he sensed him, he mounted his beast in a shirt, with a club in his hand, and defended himself for a little while. Then he was seized and carried to Tūzūn, who took him to Wāsiṭ, and he gouged out his eyes and blinded him on the second day after his arrival there.
