Translation

✧ Mention of the situation of Sayf al-Dawlah at Wāsiṭ We have already mentioned the stay of Sayf al-Dawlah ʿAlī b. Ḥamdān at Wāsiṭ after the Barīdīs departed from it. He wanted to go down to al-Baṣrah to take it from al-Barīdī, but he could not because of the scarcity of money he had with him. He wrote to his brother about that, but he did not send him anything. Tūzūn and Khajkhaj were behaving badly and were domineering over him. Then Nāṣir al-Dawlah sent money to his brother with Abū ʿAbd Allāh al-Kūfī to distribute among the Turks. Tūzūn and Khajkhaj made him hear unpleasant words and rose against him. Sayf al-Dawlah seized him, concealed him from them, and sent him to Baghdādh. He ordered Tūzūn to go to al-Jāmida, take it, and keep its revenues for himself, and he ordered Khajkhaj to go to Madhār, guard it, and take its revenues. Sayf al-Dawlah was making the Turks disinclined to stay in Iraq, and he was making it seem good to them to aim for Syria with him and take control of it and of Egypt. He would speak ill of his brother to them, and they would believe him about his brother, but they would not respond to him about going to Syria with him, and they would drag their feet with him, while he would comply with what they wanted. When it was the last day of Shaʿbān, the Turks rose against Sayf al-Dawlah and raided him at night. He fled from his camp to Baghdādh, his baggage train was plundered, and a group of his companions were killed. As for Nāṣir al-Dawlah, when Abū ʿAbd Allāh al-Kūfī reached him and told him the news, he came out intending to go to al-Mawṣil. Al-Muttaqī rode to him and asked him to refrain from going, and he showed him compliance until he returned, then he went to al-Mawṣil. His house was plundered. The Daylam and the Turks rose up, and Abū Isḥāq al-Qarārīṭī managed the matter without being named as vizier. The emirate of Nāṣir al-Dawlah Abū Muḥammad al-Ḥusayn b. ʿAbd Allāh b. Ḥamdān in Baghdādh lasted thirteen months and five days, and the vizierate of Abū al-ʿAbbās up to al-Aṣbahānī was fifty-one days. Sayf al-Dawlah reached Baghdādh.
