✧ Then the year 331 AH began. Mention of Nāṣir's capture of ʿAdl al-Bujkamī In this year, Abū ʿAbd Allāh al-Ḥusayn b. Saʿīd b. Ḥamdān captured ʿAdl, the chamberlain of Bujkam, and blinded him, and sent him to Baghdādh. The reason for this was that ʿAdl, after the killing of Bujkam, came to be with Ibn Rāʾiq, and he set out with him to Baghdādh, and went up with him to al-Mawṣil. When Nāṣir al-Dawlah killed Abū Bakr b. Rāʾiq, as we have mentioned, ʿAdl became part of Nāṣir al-Dawlah's entourage. Nāṣir al-Dawlah sent him with ʿAlī b. Khalaf b. Ṭiyyāb to Diyār Muḍar and the Syria that had been in the hand of Ibn Rāʾiq. There was at al-Raḥbah, on behalf of Ibn Rāʾiq, a man called Musāfir b. al-Ḥasan. When Ibn Rāʾiq was killed, this Musāfir seized control of the district, prevented access to it, and collected its land tax. Ibn Ṭiyyāb sent ʿAdl against him with an army to expel him from al-Raḥbah. When he marched there, Musāfir abandoned it without fighting, and ʿAdl the chamberlain took possession of the town. He corresponded with those in Baghdādh who were from the Bujkamīs, and they came to him in concealment. His position was strengthened by them, and he gained control of the Euphrates road and part of al-Khābūr. Then Musāfir gathered a group from the Banū Numayr and marched to Qarqīsiyā, and he expelled ʿAdl's followers from it and took possession of it. ʿAdl marched there and concealed himself from it. ʿAdl resolved to head for al-Khābūr and take possession of it, but its people were wary of him and sought help from the Banū Numayr. When ʿAdl learned of that, he abandoned his aim against them. Then he took to riding out every day an hour before the afternoon prayer with all his army and roaming the deserts of Qarqīsiyā until the end of the day. His spies reported to him from the people of al-Khābūr that they were on guard whenever they heard of his movement. He did this for forty days. When the people of al-Khābūr saw that his riding continued and that he did not intend them, they dispersed their gathering and felt safe from him. His spies brought him that information as usual. When his men were fully assembled, he ordered them to march and to send their servants to carry their baggage. He set out immediately and fell upon al-Shamsāniyyah at dawn. It is one of the greatest and most fortified villages of al-Khābūr. Its people fortified themselves against him, but he fought them, breached the wall, and took possession of the town. He killed people there and took from its inhabitants much wealth. He stayed there for some days, then marched to another place. He remained in al-Khābūr for six months, collecting the land tax and great sums of money. He drew strength from that, and his followers were also strengthened by what came to them. He returned to al-Raḥbah, and his circumstances expanded and his power became great. Armies from Baghdādh sought him out, and his standing grew great. Then he set out, intending to go to Naṣībīn, because he knew that Nāṣir al-Dawlah was far from al-Mawṣil and the Jazīrah lands. He could not aim for al-Raqqah and Ḥarrān because al-Muʾnisī was there with an army, and with him a group from the Banū Numayr, so he left them and marched to Raʾs ʿAyn, and from there to Naṣībīn. His news reached al-Ḥusayn b. Ḥamdān, who gathered the army and marched against him to Naṣībīn. When he drew near, ʿAdl met him with his army. When the two armies met, ʿAdl's followers sought safe-conduct to Ibn Ḥamdān, and only a small number of his close companions remained with him. Ibn Ḥamdān captured him, and captured his son with him. He blinded ʿAdl and sent both of them to Baghdādh. He arrived there on the twentieth of Shaʿbān, and he and his son were paraded in public there.
