He heard Yūsuf b. Mūsā al-Qaṭṭān, Yaʿqūb al-Dawraqī, and al-Bukhārī and narrated from him, and many others. He had seventy men from the companions of Ibn ʿUyaynah. Daʿlaj, Ibn al-Muẓaffar, and al-Dāraquṭnī narrated from him. His assembly was attended by ten thousand. He was [truthful, learned in adab, a jurist, foremost in fiqh and ḥadīth]. He held the judgeship of al-Kūfah for sixty years, and the judgeship of Fārs and its districts was added to him. Then he asked to be excused and was excused. He established in his house an assembly for examining fiqh in the year two hundred seventy, and the jurists continued to come to him until he died in this year. From al-Ḥusayn b. Ismāʿīl, he said: I was with Abū al-Ḥasan b. ʿAbdūn while he was writing for Badr, and with him was a group including Abū Bakr al-Dāwūdī and Aḥmad b. Khālid al-Mādharāʾī. He mentioned the story of his debate with al-Dāwūdī about preference, until he said: Al-Dāwūdī said: "By God, you cannot mention the stations of ʿAlī among this commonality." I said: "I, by God, know them: his station at Badr, Uḥud, the Trench, and the day of Khaybar." He said: "If you know them, then you ought to place him above Abū Bakr and ʿUmar." I said: "I know them, and from that I have placed Abū Bakr and ʿUmar [above him]." He said: "From what?" I said: "Abū Bakr was with the Prophet ﷺ on the canopy on the day of Badr; his station was the station of the commander, and with him the army would not be routed. ʿAlī's station was the station of a dueler, and a dueler does not cause the army to be routed with him." And he began to mention his virtues, and I began to mention the virtues of Abū Bakr. Then I said: "Do not deny them any right, but those from whom we took the Qurʾān and the sunan, the Companions of the Messenger of God ﷺ, placed Abū Bakr first, so we placed him first because of their placing him first." Aḥmad b. Khālid turned and said: "I do not know why they did this." I said: "If you do not know, then I know." He said: "Why [did they do it]?" I said: "Indeed, in the Jāhiliyyah, lordship and leadership did not go beyond two positions: either a man who had a clan to protect him, or a man who had surplus wealth and gave generously from it. Then Islam came, and it brought the door of religion. Then the Prophet ﷺ died, and Abū Bakr had no wealth, and Taym did not have, compared with ʿAbd Manāf and Makhzūm, that status. So when wealth, by which Quraysh led the people of the Jāhiliyyah, became void, nothing remained except the door of religion, so they placed him first because of it." And he silenced him. Al-Maḥāmilī died in Rabīʿ al-Ākhir of this year. 2449 - ʿAlī b. Muḥammad b. ʿUbayd b. Ḥassān, Abū al-Ḥasan al-Bazzāz: He was born in the year two hundred fifty-two, and he heard ʿAbbās al-Dūrī and Abū Qilābah. Al-Dāraquṭnī narrated from him. He was trustworthy and virtuous. He died in Shawwāl of this year. 2450 - ʿAlī b. Muḥammad b. Sahl, Abū al-Ḥasan al-Ṣāʾigh al-Dīnawarī: From Mimshādh, he said: One day I went out to the desert. While I was passing by, behold, a vulture opened its wings. I was amazed at it, so I looked, and there was Abū al-Ḥasan al-Dīnawarī al-Ṣāʾigh standing in prayer while the vulture shaded him. Al-Ṣāʾigh died in Miṣr in this year. 2451 - ʿAbd al-Ghāfir b. Salāmah b. Aḥmad b. ʿAbd al-Ghāfir b. Salāmah b. Hāshim al-Ḥaḍramī, from the people of Ḥimṣ: He was a great traveler. He came to Baghdād and narrated there from a group. Al-Dāraquṭnī, Ibn Shāhīn, Ibn al-Ṣalt al-Ahwāzī—and he was the last of the Baghdādīs to narrate from him—and the judge Abū ʿUmar al-Hāshimī al-Baṣrī—and he was the last to narrate from him in the whole world—narrated from him. He was trustworthy. He died in al-Baṣrah in this year. 2452 - Muḥammad b. Aḥmad b. Ṣāliḥ b. Aḥmad b. Muḥammad b. Ḥanbal, Abū Jaʿfar al-Shaybānī: He narrated from his father and from his uncle Zuhayr b. Ṣāliḥ. Al-Dāraquṭnī and others narrated from him. He died in this year. 2453 - Muḥammad b. ʿAbd Allāh b. Muḥammad b. Muslim, Abū Bakr, imam of the old congregational mosque in Miṣr: He narrated from Ibrāhīm b. Marzūq and Bakkār b. Qutaybah and others. He was a grammarian, teaching grammar to the children of kings. He died in Rabīʿ al-Ākhir of this year. 2454 - Naṣr b. Aḥmad, Abū al-Qāsim al-Baṣrī, known as al-Khubz Aruzzī the poet: Al-Muʿāfā b. Zakariyyā and others narrated from him. From Abū Muḥammad ʿAbd Allāh b. Muḥammad al-Akfānī, he said: I went out with my uncle Abū ʿAbd Allāh al-Akfānī the poet, Abū al-Ḥusayn b. Lankak, Abū ʿAbd Allāh al-Mufajjiʿ, and Abū al-Ḥasan al-Sabbāk on a festival outing, and I was then a boy accompanying them. They walked until they came to Naṣr b. Aḥmad al-Khubz Aruzzī while he was baking on his griddle. The group sat with him to congratulate him on the festival and to inquire after his news, while he was kindling palm leaves beneath the griddle. He increased the fuel, and it smoked them. The group rose when the smoke increased, and Naṣr b. Aḥmad said to Abū al-Ḥusayn b. Lankak: "When will I see you, O Abū al-Ḥusayn?" Abū al-Ḥusayn said to him: "When my clothes get dirty." His clothes that day were new, of the purest white. We walked on, and Abū al-Ḥusayn b. Lankak said: "O our companions, Naṣr will not leave this assembly that we had with him without something to say, and we ought to begin him." So he sat down, called for an inkwell, and wrote: For Naṣr, in my heart is an excess of love, by which he surpasses all companions; We came to him, and he censed us with incense of palm leaves that smoked the clothes. I rose hastily, thinking that Naṣr intended by that my expulsion or my going; He said: "When will I see you, Abū Ḥusayn?" I said to him: "When my clothes get dirty." He sent the verses to Naṣr, and he dictated his reply, and we read it. He had answered: I granted Abū al-Ḥusayn the essence of my affection, and he jested with me with sweet words. He came with clothes like the first traces of gray hair, and they returned to him like the first flush of youth. I thought his sitting with me was like a wedding feast, so I was generous to him by making his clothes cling to him. I said: "When will I see you, Abū Ḥusayn?" He answered me: "When my clothes get dirty." If fastidiousness is a source of pride, then why was the legatee called Abū Turāb? [Ibn al-Jawzī said: He was eloquent and a man of letters, but he was illiterate, not knowing writing. He made rice bread, and so he was attributed to it. He died in this year.] Ibn al-Athīr said: In it died ʿAlī b. Ismāʿīl al-Ashʿarī, the theologian, the holder of the well-known school, and his birth was in the year two hundred sixty, and he was from the descendants of Abū Mūsā al-Ashʿarī. I say: The correct view is that al-Ashʿarī died in the year three hundred twenty-four, as has preceded. He said: In it died Muḥammad b. Yūsuf b. al-Naḍr al-Harawī, the Shāfiʿī jurist, and his birth was in the year two hundred twenty-nine, and he studied under al-Rabīʿ b. Sulaymān, the companion of al-Shāfiʿī. I say: In it died Abū Ḥāmid b. Bilāl, Zakariyyā b. Aḥmad al-Balkhī, ʿAbd al-Ghāfir b. Salāmah the ḥāfiẓ, Muḥammad b. Rāʾiq the emir, and the shaykh Abū Ṣāliḥ Mufliḥ al-Ḥanbalī, the founder of the Mosque of Abū Ṣāliḥ outside the East Gate of Damascus. He had miracles, states, and stations. And this is the biography of Abū Ṣāliḥ al-Dimashqī to whom the mosque outside the East Gate of Damascus is attributed: Mufliḥ b. ʿAbd Allāh Abū Ṣāliḥ the devout. He accompanied the shaykh Abū Bakr Muḥammad b. Sayyid Ḥamdaweyh al-Dimashqī and was educated by him. Al-Muwaḥḥid b. Isḥāq b. al-Burrī, Abū al-Ḥasan ʿAlī b. al-Qujjah the caretaker of the mosque, and Abū Bakr b. Dāwūd al-Dīnawarī al-Duqqī narrated from him. Al-Ḥāfiẓ Ibn ʿAsākir narrated on the authority of al-Duqqī, from the shaykh Abū Ṣāliḥ, who said: I was wandering in Mount al-Lukkām seeking ascetics. I passed by a man sitting on a rock with his head bowed. I said to him: "What are you doing here?" He said: "I look and I tend." I said to him: "I see nothing before you except stones." He said: "I look at the thoughts of my heart, and I tend the commands of my Lord. And by the One who showed you to me, do not pass beyond me." I said to him: "Speak to me with something I can benefit from so that I may go on." He said to me: "Whoever stays at the door is established in service; whoever often remembers sins increases in regret; whoever is self-sufficient through God is safe from want." Then he left me and went away. And from the shaykh Abū Ṣāliḥ, he said: I remained six or seven days without eating or drinking. A great thirst came over me. I came to the river that was behind the mosque and sat looking at the water. I remembered His saying, Exalted be He: "And His Throne was upon the water" [Hūd: 7], and the thirst left me. I remained the full ten days. And from him, he said: Once I remained forty days without drinking water. The shaykh Abū Bakr Muḥammad b. Sayyid Ḥamdaweyh met me, took me by the hand, brought me into his house, brought me water, and said to me: "Drink." So I drank. He took my leftover, went to his wife, and said to her: "Drink the leftover of a man who has remained forty days without drinking water." Abū Ṣāliḥ said: No one knew that about me except God, Mighty and Majestic. And from the speech of Abū Ṣāliḥ: The world is forbidden to hearts, permitted to souls, because everything that is permitted for you to look at with the eye of your head is forbidden for you to look at with the eye of your heart. He used to say: The body is the garment of the heart; the heart is the garment of the inner heart; the inner heart is the garment of the conscience; the conscience is the garment of the secret; and the secret is the garment of knowledge. Abū Ṣāliḥ had many merits, may God have mercy on him. His death was in Jumādā al-Ūlā of this year. In it died Muḥammad (b. Muḥammad) al-Jayhānī, vizier of al-Saʿīd Naṣr b. Aḥmad, under the ruins. In it died Muḥammad b. Yūsuf [b. Bishr] b. al-Naḍr al-Harawī, the Shāfiʿī jurist. His birth was in the year two hundred twenty-nine, and he studied under al-Rabīʿ b. Sulaymān, the companion of al-Shāfiʿī, and learned from him.
