Translation

✧ Mention of Abū ʿAlī b. Muḥtāj's seizure of the land of al-Jabal and Washmakīr's obedience to the Samanids We have previously mentioned, in the year 329 [AH], the march of Abū ʿAlī b. Muḥtāj, commander of the armies of Khurāsān for the Samanids, to al-Rayy, and his taking it from Washmakīr, and Washmakīr's march to Ṭabaristān. Abū ʿAlī remained in al-Rayy after conquering it for that winter, and he dispatched the armies to the land of al-Jabal, which they conquered. He took possession of Zinkān, Abhar, Qazwīn, Qumm, Karaj, Hamadhān, Nahāwand, and al-Dīnawar up to the borders of Ḥulwān, and he appointed tax collectors in them and collected their revenues. Al-Ḥasan b. al-Fayrūzān was in Sāriyah, so Washmakīr marched against him and besieged him. He then went to Abū ʿAlī seeking his aid, while Washmakīr remained fortified in Sāriyah. Abū ʿAlī marched against him, accompanied by al-Ḥasan, and they besieged him there in the year 330 [AH]. He tightened the siege on him and pressed him with fighting every day, while they were in a harsh winter with much rain. Washmakīr requested a truce, so Abū ʿAlī made peace with him and took hostages from him to ensure his adherence to obedience to the amīr Naṣr b. Aḥmad al-Sāmānī. He then departed from him to Jurjān in Jumādā al-Ākhirah of the year 331 AH, where news reached him of the death of the amīr Naṣr b. Aḥmad, so he left it for Khurāsān.
