✧ Mention of the killing of Ibn Rāʾiq, and the appointment of Ibn Ḥamdān as commander of commanders Al-Muttaqī lillāh had sent to Nāṣir al-Dawlah b. Ḥamdān requesting his support against the Barīdīs, so he sent his brother Sayf al-Dawlah ʿAlī b. ʿAbd Allāh b. Ḥamdān as a reinforcement to him with a dense army. He met al-Muttaqī and Ibn Rāʾiq at Tikrīt, having been routed, and Sayf al-Dawlah served al-Muttaqī with great service and proceeded with him to al-Mawṣil. Nāṣir al-Dawlah left it for the eastern side and headed toward Maʿlathāyā. Messengers went back and forth between him and Ibn Rāʾiq until they made a pact and reached an agreement. Nāṣir al-Dawlah came and encamped on the Tigris on the eastern side. Prince Abū Manṣūr b. al-Muttaqī and Ibn Rāʾiq crossed over to him to greet him. He scattered dinars and dirhams over al-Muttaqī's son. When they wanted to leave him, Ibn al-Muttaqī mounted, and Ibn Rāʾiq wanted to mount, but Nāṣir al-Dawlah said to him: "Stay with me today so that we may discuss what we should do." Ibn Rāʾiq excused himself on account of Ibn al-Muttaqī, but Ibn Ḥamdān insisted. Ibn Rāʾiq became suspicious of him, pulled his sleeve from his hand and tore it, and wanted to mount, but the horse shied with him and he fell. Ibn Ḥamdān shouted to his companions: "Kill him!" So they killed him and threw him into the Tigris. Ibn Ḥamdān sent to al-Muttaqī saying that he knew that Ibn Rāʾiq had intended to assassinate him, so he had done to him what he did. Al-Muttaqī replied to him with a gracious reply and commanded him to come to him. Ibn Ḥamdān proceeded to al-Muttaqī lillāh, who bestowed a robe of honor upon him, gave him the title "Nāṣir al-Dawlah," and made him commander of commanders. That was at the beginning of Shaʿbān. He also bestowed a robe of honor upon his brother Abū al-Ḥusayn ʿAlī and gave him the title "Sayf al-Dawlah." The killing of Ibn Rāʾiq was on Monday, nine nights remaining of Rajab. When Ibn Rāʾiq was killed, al-Ikhshīd marched from Egypt to Damascus, where Muḥammad b. Yazdād, Ibn Rāʾiq's deputy, was. He sought safety from al-Ikhshīd and surrendered Damascus to him. Al-Ikhshīd confirmed him in it, then transferred him from it to Egypt and put him in charge of its police. It is said that Ibn Rāʾiq has poetry, among which is: My face turns yellow when my glance contemplates him, and his face turns red with bashfulness, until it is as though what is on his cheek has been transferred to him from my heart's blood. It has also been said that these lines are by al-Rāḍī billāh, and this has been mentioned before.
