Translation

✧ Mention of the Barīdī’s seizure of Baghdādh, and al-Muttaqī’s going up to al-Mawṣil Abū ʿAbd Allāh al-Barīdī dispatched his brother Abū al-Ḥusayn to Baghdādh with the entire army of Turks and Daylamites, and Ibn Rāʾiq resolved to fortify himself in the caliphal palace. He repaired its wall, set up ballistas and mangonels on it and on the Tigris, mobilized the common people, and enlisted some of them. They rose up in Baghdādh, burning and plundering, and seized people by night and day. Al-Muttaqī li-llāh and Ibn Rāʾiq went out to the Diyālā River in mid-Jumādā al-Ākhirah, and Abū al-Ḥusayn met them there on water and land. The people fought, and the common people were on the bank of the Tigris on both sides fighting those on the water from the Barīdī’s men. (The people of Baghdādh were defeated, and the Barīdī’s men took possession) of the caliphal palace and entered it from the water. That was on the 21st of Jumādā al-Ākhirah. Al-Muttaqī and his son the amīr Abū Manṣūr fled with about twenty horsemen, and Ibn Rāʾiq caught up with them with his army, and they all went toward al-Mawṣil. The vizier al-Qarārīṭī went into hiding. The duration of his second vizierate was forty days, and Ibn Rāʾiq’s emirate was six months. The Barīdī’s men killed those of the household staff they found in the caliphal palace, plundered it, and plundered the houses of the women of the palace. Plundering increased in Baghdādh by night and day. They took Kūrtakīn from his prison, and Abū al-Ḥusayn sent him to his brother in Wāsiṭ, and that was the last that was heard of him. They did not molest al-Qāhir bi-llāh. Abū al-Ḥusayn alighted at the house of Muʾnis that Ibn Rāʾiq had been occupying, and the plundering intensified. Abū al-Ḥusayn then appointed Tūzūn over the shurṭah of eastern Baghdādh and made Nūshtakīn over the shurṭah of the western side, and the people became a little calmer. Abū al-Ḥusayn al-Barīdī took hostages from the commanders who were with Tūzūn and others, and took their women and children and sent them to his brother Abū ʿAbd Allāh in Wāsiṭ.
