Translation
✧ When the affairs of the ummah weakened in these times, and the pillars of the Abbasid state gave way, and the Qarāmiṭah and the innovators gained sway over the provinces..., the resolve of the ruler of al-Andalus, the amīr ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Muḥammad al-Umawī al-Marwānī, strengthened, and he said: “I am the most entitled of people to the caliphate,” and he styled himself Amīr al-Muʾminīn al-Nāṣir li-Dīn Allāh, and took control of most of al-Andalus. He possessed exceeding awe, engaged in jihād and raiding, and followed a praiseworthy conduct. He extirpated the usurpers and conquered seventy fortresses. Thus those called Amīr al-Muʾminīn in the world became three: the Abbasid in Baghdad, this one in al-Andalus, and the Mahdī in al-Qayrawān.
