Then the Year 324 AH Began
وَفِيهَا وَقَعَ بِبَغْدَادَ غَلَاءٌ عَظِيمٌ وَفَنَاءٌ كَثِيرٌ، بِحَيْثُ عُدِمَ الْخُبْزُ مِنْهَا خَمْسَةَ أَيَّامٍ، وَمَاتَ مِنْ أَهْلِ الْبَلَدِ خَلْقٌ كَثِيرٌ، وَأَكْثَرُ ذَلِكَ كَانَ فِي الضُّعَفَاءِ، وَكَانَ الْمَوْتَى يُلْقَوْنَ فِي الطُّرُقَاتِ لَيْسَ لَهُمْ مَنْ يَقُومُ بِأَمْرِهِمْ، وَيُحْمَلُ عَلَى الْجِنَازَةِ الْوَاحِدَةِ الِاثْنَانُ مِنَ الْمَوْتَى، وَرُبَّمَا يُوضَعُ بَيْنَهُمْ صَبِيٌّ، وَرُبَّمَا حُفِرَتِ الْحُفْرَةُ الْوَاحِدَةُ فَتُوَسَّعُ حَتَّى يُوضَعَ فِيهَا جَمَاعَةٌ، وَمَاتَ مِنْ أَصْبَهَانَ نَحْوُ مِائَتَيْ أَلْفِ إِنْسَانٍ.
Translation
✧ In it [the year], there occurred in Baghdad a great scarcity and much mortality, such that bread was entirely absent from it for five days, and a great multitude of the people of the city died, most of that being among the weak. The dead were cast into the roads, having no one to attend to their affair, and two of the dead would be carried on a single bier. Sometimes a small boy would be placed between them, and sometimes a single grave would be dug and then widened until a group was placed in it. From Isfahan, about two hundred thousand people died.
