Then the Year 322 AH Began
وَفِيهَا سَارَ الدُّمُسْتُقُ قَرْقَاشُ فِي خَمْسِينَ أَلْفًا مِنَ الرُّومِ، فَنَازَلَ مَلَطْيَةَ وَحَصَرَهَا مُدَّةً طَوِيلَةً، وَهَلَكَ أَكْثَرُ أَهْلِهَا بِالْجُوعِ، وَضَرَبَ خَيْمَتَيْنِ عَلَى إِحْدَاهُمَا صَلِيبٌ، وَقَالَ: مَنْ أَرَادَ النَّصْرَانِيَّةَ، انْحَازَ إِلَى خَيْمَةِ الصَّلِيبِ لِيَرُدَّ عَلَيْهِ أَهْلَهُ وَمَالَهُ، وَمَنْ أَرَادَ الْإِسْلَامَ، انْحَازَ إِلَى الْخَيْمَةِ الْأُخْرَى، وَلَهُ الْأَمَانُ عَلَى نَفْسِهِ، وَنُبَلِّغُهُ مَأْمَنَهُ، فَانْحَازَ أَكْثَرُ الْمُسْلِمِينَ إِلَى الْخَيْمَةِ الَّتِي عَلَيْهَا الصَّلِيبُ، طَمَعًا فِي أَهْلِيهِمْ وَأَمْوَالِهِمْ، وَسَيَّرَ مَعَ الْبَاقِينَ بِطْرِيقًا يُبَلِّغُهُمْ مَأْمَنَهُمْ، وَفَتَحَهَا بِالْأَمَانِ مُسْتَهَلَّ جُمَادَى الْآخِرَةِ يَوْمَ الْأَحَدِ، وَمَلَكُوا سُمَيْسَاطَ، وَخَرَّبُوا الْأَعْمَالَ وَأَكْثَرُوا الْقَتْلَ، وَفَعَلُوا الْأَفَاعِيلَ الشَّنِيعَةَ، وَصَارَ أَكْثَرُ الْبِلَادِ فِي أَيْدِيهِمْ.
Translation
✧ In this year, the Domesticus Qarqāsh marched with fifty thousand Byzantines and encamped against Malaṭyah, besieging it for a long time. Most of its inhabitants perished from hunger. He pitched two tents, on one of which was a cross, and said: 'Whoever desires Christianity, let him repair to the tent of the cross, and his family and property will be restored to him. Whoever desires Islam, let him repair to the other tent, and he shall have security for his person, and we will convey him to his place of safety.' Most of the Muslims repaired to the tent with the cross, coveting their families and properties. With the remainder, he dispatched a patrician to convey them to their place of safety. He conquered it by capitulation at the beginning of Jumādā al-Ākhirah on Sunday. They took Sumaysāṭ, laid waste to the districts, killed many, committed abominable deeds, and most of the lands came under their control.
