Then the Year 322 AH Began
Translation
✧ In this year al-Qāhir billāh killed Isḥāq b. Ismāʿīl al-Nawbakhtī, who was the one who advised his appointment as caliph, so he was like one seeking his own death by his own cloven hoof. He also killed Abū al-Sarāyā b. Ḥamdān, who was the youngest son of his father. The reason for killing them both was that he had wanted to buy two singing slave-girls before he assumed the caliphate, and those two outbid him in their price, so he bore a grudge against them for that. When he wanted to kill them, he summoned them for a drinking session, so they adorned themselves and perfumed themselves and came into his presence. Then he ordered that they both be thrown into a well in the house while he was present. They pleaded and wept, but he paid no attention to them and threw them into it, then filled it in over them.
