✧ Mention of Mardāwīj's seizure of al-Ahwāz When Mardāwīj learned of ʿAlī b. Būyah's seizure of Fārs, that distressed him greatly, so he marched to Iṣbahān to devise a plan against Ibn Būyah. He decided to dispatch an army to al-Ahwāz to seize it and block the road against ʿImād al-Dawlah Ibn Būyah if he headed toward him, so that no route to the caliph would remain for him, while they would attack him from the direction of Iṣbahān and his army would attack him from the direction of al-Ahwāz, so that he could not withstand them. The armies of Mardāwīj marched in the month of Ramaḍān, until they reached Īdhaj. Yāqūt feared being caught between them and Ibn Būyah, so he marched to al-Ahwāz (with his son al-Muẓaffar, and he wrote to al-Rāḍī asking to be invested with the districts of al-Ahwāz), and he was invested with that. Abū ʿAbd Allāh b. al-Barīdī, his secretary, became attached to him in addition to the tax districts of al-Ahwāz already in his hands, and his brother Abū al-Ḥusayn took Yāqūt's place in Baghdādh. Then Mardāwīj's army seized Rāmahurmuz at the beginning of Shawwāl of this year, and they marched toward al-Ahwāz. Yāqūt stood against them at the Arbaq bridge, and he did not allow them to cross because of the force of the water's flow. They remained facing him for forty days, then they departed and crossed the Nahr al-Musriqān on rafts. The news reached Yāqūt, and reinforcements from Baghdādh had come to him two days before that, so he marched with them to the village of al-Rīkh, and from there he marched to Wāsiṭ, where Muḥammad b. Rāʾiq was at that time, and he vacated western Wāsiṭ for him, so Yāqūt encamped there. When ʿImād al-Dawlah learned of Mardāwīj's seizure of al-Ahwāz, he wrote to Mardāwīj's deputy seeking to win him over and asking him to mediate the situation between himself and Mardāwīj. (He did that, and he interceded for him, and Mardāwīj agreed) to that on condition that he obey him and proclaim his name in the khuṭbah. So the matter was settled between them, and Ibn Būyah sent him a magnificent gift and sent his brother Rukn al-Dawlah as a hostage, and he proclaimed Mardāwīj's name in the khuṭbah in his lands. Mardāwīj was pleased with him, and it happened that he was killed as we shall mention, so Ibn Būyah's authority grew strong.
