Then the Year 322 AH Began

Translation

✧ Then the year 322 AH began. Mention of Ibn Būyah’s capture of Shīrāz. In this year ʿImād al-Dawlah b. Būyah prevailed over Yāqūt and took possession of Shīrāz. We have already mentioned the march of ʿImād al-Dawlah b. Būyah to al-Qanṭarah and how Yāqūt got there before him. When Ibn Būyah reached it, Yāqūt prevented him from crossing, so he was forced to fight him. They fought in Jumādā al-Ākhirah. ʿAlī b. Būyah brought his companions together and promised them that he would dismount with them in battle and fight as one of them, and he gave them hopes and promised them good treatment. It was part of his good fortune that a group of his companions sought protection from Yāqūt. When Yāqūt saw them, he ordered their necks to be struck. Those with Ibn Būyah then became certain that they would have no safety with him, so they fought like men seeking death. Then Yāqūt placed ahead of his companions many foot soldiers who fought with naphtha vessels. The wind turned against them and blew hard. When they threw the fire, the fire came back upon them and caught their faces and clothes. They fell into confusion, and Ibn Būyah’s companions fell upon them and killed most of the foot soldiers. They engaged the horsemen, who were routed, and the turn of defeat fell upon Yāqūt and his companions. When he was routed, he climbed onto a high mound and called to his companions to return. About four thousand horsemen gathered to him. He said to them: 'Stand firm. The Daylamites will busy themselves with plunder and scatter; then we will seize them.' So they stood firm with him. When Ibn Būyah saw them standing firm, he forbade his companions from plundering and said: 'Your enemy is watching for you to busy yourselves with plunder, so that he may turn upon you, and that would be your ruin. Leave this aside, finish off the routed enemy, and then return to it.' They did that. When Yāqūt saw that they were still determined on him, he fled in defeat, and Ibn Būyah's companions pursued him, killing, taking prisoners, and seizing horses and weapons as booty. On that day, Muʿizz al-Dawlah Abū al-Ḥusayn Aḥmad b. Būyah had the most excellent record among the people. He was a youth whose beard had not yet grown, and he was nineteen years old. Then they returned to the camp and took booty. In his camp they found hoods of felt with fox tails attached, and they found fetters and shackles. They asked about them, and Yāqūt's companions said: 'These were prepared for you, to put on you and parade you through the lands.' Ibn Būyah's companions suggested that the same be done to them, but he refused and said: 'That would be wrongdoing and a mean victory, and Yāqūt has already met with his wrongdoing.' Then he treated the prisoners well and released them, saying: 'This is a blessing, and gratitude for it is obligatory and calls for more.' He gave the prisoners the choice between staying with him and joining Yāqūt. They chose to stay with him, so he bestowed robes of honor on them and treated them well. He marched from the site of the battle until he encamped at Shīrāz. He proclaimed safety to the people, spread justice, and appointed for them a governor to prevent anyone wronging them. He took possession of those lands. The soldiers asked for their pay, but he had nothing to give them, so his situation almost collapsed. He sat in an upper room in the house of the emirate in Shīrāz, pondering his affair. He saw a snake come out of a place in the ceiling of that room and enter a hole there. He feared it would fall on him, so he called the servants. They opened the place, and behind it they saw a door. They entered into another room containing ten chests filled with money and jewelry. In them was property worth five hundred thousand dinars. He spent it and established his kingship after it had been on the verge of vanishing. It is related that he wanted to have clothes tailored. They directed him to a tailor who had belonged to Yāqūt, so he summoned him. He came in fear, and he was deaf. ʿImād al-Dawlah said to him: 'Do not be afraid. We have only summoned you to tailor clothes.' He did not know what he said, and began swearing by divorce and by renunciation of the religion of Islam that he had not opened the chests of Yāqūt that were in his possession. The emir was astonished at this coincidence, and ordered him to bring them. He brought eight chests containing money and clothes worth three hundred thousand dinars. Then a great sum also came to light for him from the deposits of Yāqūt and the treasures of Yaʿqūb and ʿAmr, the two sons of al-Layth. His treasuries became full, and his kingship was established. When he was firmly established in Shīrāz and Fārs, he wrote to al-Rāḍī billāh—the caliphate had passed to him, as we shall mention—and to his vizier Abū ʿAlī b. Muqlah, informing them that he was obedient, and asking that he be granted a tax contract for the lands in his possession. He offered one million dirhams. The request was granted, and they sent him robes of honor, stipulating to the envoy that he should not hand over the robes until after receiving the money. When the envoy arrived, ʿImād al-Dawlah went out to meet him and asked him for the robes of honor and the banner. The envoy mentioned the condition to him. He took them from him by force, put on the robes of honor, unfurled the banner before him, and entered the city. He deceived the envoy about the money. The envoy died in his presence in the year 323 AH. His standing became great, and men came to him from all regions. When Mardāwīj heard what Ibn Būyah had attained, he was greatly disturbed by it, and he marched to Iṣbahān to take measures against him. His brother Washmakīr was there, because when al-Qāhir was deposed and Muḥammad b. Yāqūt withdrew from it, Washmakīr returned to it after it had remained nineteen days without an emir. When Mardāwīj reached it, he sent his brother Washmakīr back to al-Rayy.
