Muḥammad b. Salāmah b. Salamah b. ʿAbd al-Malik, Abū Jaʿfar al-Ṭaḥāwī the jurist: He was born in the year 239 AH. He was reliable, discerning, a jurist, and intelligent, from Ṭaḥā, a village in Upper Egypt. Abū Saʿīd b. Yūnus said: He died on Thursday night, the first of Dhū al-Qaʿdah in the year 321 AH, and he left no equal behind. 2322 - Aḥmad b. Muḥammad b. Mūsā b. al-Naḍr b. Ḥakīm b. ʿAlī b. Dharbī, Abū Bakr, known as Ibn Abī Ḥāmid: The keeper of the public treasury. He heard ʿAbbās al-Dūrī and many others. Al-Dāraquṭnī and others narrated from him. He was trustworthy, truthful, and generous. Abū al-Ḥasan al-Dāraquṭnī said: Abū Ḥāmid al-Marwarūdhī seldom visited Ibn Abī Ḥāmid, the keeper of the treasury. In his study circle there was a man from among the students of jurisprudence who was absent for some days. He asked about him and was told he was preoccupied with a matter that had kept him from attending the circle. So he summoned him and asked about his condition. He mentioned that he had bought a slave girl for himself, and that his funds had run out and his means were straitened that year because supplies from his home town were cut off. He owed debts to several common people, and found no way to pay them except by selling the slave girl. When he received the price, he remembered her, longed for her, and felt desolate at her separation from him until he could not occupy himself with jurisprudence or anything else because of his intense anxiety and his heart's attachment to her. He mentioned that Ibn Abī Ḥāmid had bought her. The situation necessitated that Abū Ḥāmid the jurist go to Ibn Abī Ḥāmid to ask for the annulment of the sale and the return of the money to the seller. He went, accompanied by the man. When he sought permission to enter upon Ibn Abī Ḥāmid, he was granted permission immediately. When he entered, Ibn Abī Ḥāmid stood up, received him, and honored him with the utmost honor. He asked about his condition and what had brought him. Abū Ḥāmid told him the story of the jurist and the sale of the slave girl, and asked him to take back the money and return the slave girl to her owner. Ibn Abī Ḥāmid had no knowledge of the slave girl, nor any information about her affair, because his wife had bought her without his knowing. This came upon him in a way that showed on his face. Then he got up and went to his wife to ask about a slave girl bought in the slave market matching the description and attribute. It happened that his wife was sitting with the slave girl present, while they were adorning her, and she had been decked out in fine clothes and jewelry. She said: "My lord, this is the slave girl you seek." He was overjoyed at that, as he was eager to fulfill Abū Ḥāmid's need. He returned to Abū Ḥāmid and said: "I feared the slave girl might not be in my house, but now, praise be to God, she is with us, and the matter is in the sheikh's hands—may God strengthen him—regarding her." Then he ordered the slave girl to be brought out. When she was brought out, the young man's face changed severely. Thus he knew that the matter was as the jurist had described of his love for her and his ardent passion. Ibn Abī Ḥāmid said to him: "This is your slave girl." He said: "Yes, this is my slave girl," and his speech faltered from the intensity of what befell him upon seeing her. Ibn Abī Ḥāmid said to him: "Take her, may God bless you in her." Abū Ḥāmid thanked him profusely and asked him to take the money, informing him that it was exactly three thousand dirhams. Ibn Abī Ḥāmid refused to take it. The talk went on at length, and Abū Ḥāmid said: "We only came to ask for the annulment; we did not intend to take her in this manner." Ibn Abī Ḥāmid said to him: "This is a jurist, and he sold her because of his poverty and need. If the money is taken from him, it is feared he might sell her a second time to someone who will not return her to him. The money will be his debt; when supplies come from his home town, he may repay it." So he gave him the money as a gift. On her were jewelry and clothes of considerable value. Abū Ḥāmid said to him: "If the sheikh—may God support him—would do the favor of sending someone with the slave girl to receive these clothes and jewelry that are on her, for this jurist has no one to carry them for him." He said: "Glory be to God! This is something we gifted her with and gave to her, whether she is in our possession or leaves our hands, and we do not take back what we have given." Abū Ḥāmid realized that what he said was the right course, so he did not insist, and it found a good place in his heart. When he was about to rise and bid farewell, Ibn Abī Ḥāmid said: "I would like to ask her something before she leaves." He said: "Slave girl, which do you love more: us or this master of yours who sold you, and you are now his?" She said: "My lord, as for you, may God improve your assistance and do good to you, you have been kind to me and enriched me. As for this master of mine, if I possessed from him what he possesses of me, I would not sell him for great treasures." The company admired her for that and for her intelligence despite her young age. They bade him farewell and departed. Ibn Abī Ḥāmid died in Ramaḍān of this year. 2323 - Saʿīd b. Muḥammad b. Aḥmad b. Saʿīd, Abū ʿUthmān al-Bayyiʿ: He was the brother of Zubayr b. Muḥammad al-Ḥāfiẓ. He heard from a group, and Ibn Shāhīn and al-Dāraquṭnī narrated from him. Yūsuf al-Qawwās mentioned him among his trustworthy sheikhs. He died in Jumādā al-Ākhirah of this year. 2324 - Shaghab, mother of al-Muqtadir bi-llāh: She had immense wealth beyond count. From her estates she received one million dinars every year. She gave most of it in charity. She constantly attended to the welfare of the pilgrims, sending along with them a store of drink and physicians, and ordering the repair of the cisterns. She fell ill and her health deteriorated. Then the killing of her son al-Muqtadir came upon her suddenly. She was told he had not been buried, so she grieved intensely, slapped her face, and refrained from eating and drinking until she nearly perished. They continued to treat her gently until she ate a morsel with salt. Then al-Qāhir bi-llāh summoned her and interrogated her with gentleness and threats. She swore to him that she had no money or jewels except chests containing clothes, jewelry, and perfume. She mentioned that if she had had money, she would not have abandoned her son to be killed. He struck her with his hand and hung her up by one foot. He found nothing with her except what she had acknowledged, and it was taken. Its value was about one hundred and thirty thousand dinars. From ʿAlī b. al-Muḥsin al-Tanūkhī, from his father, who said: Al-Qāhir tortured Umm al-Muqtadir with various torments until it was said he hung her upside down, and her urine ran over her face. She said to him: "If we had money, no deficiency in our affairs would have led to your sitting [on the throne] so that you could punish me with this punishment. I am your mother according to the Book of God, and I saved you from my son in the first instance." Abū al-Ḥusayn b. ʿAyyāsh said: My uncle Abū Muḥammad narrated to me, saying: My uncle Abū al-Ḥusayn b. Abī ʿUmar the judge and Ibn al-Ḥubāb the jeweler sent me to al-Qāhir. He had requested two witnesses to testify against Umm al-Muqtadir regarding her authorization to sell her properties. We entered upon al-Qāhir, greeted him, and stood. One of the servants handed us a document beginning: "Shaghab, client of al-Muʿtaḍid, mother of Jaʿfar al-Muqtadir, acknowledged..." It was a power of attorney to sell her properties. We said to the servant: "Where is she?" He said: "Behind the door." We asked the caliph for permission to address her. He said: "Do so." We said: "Are you here so that we may read to you?" She said: "Yes." We read the document to her and confirmed it with her. Then we paused from writing the testimony, seeking to see her. The caliph said: "What is the matter with you?" We said: "O Commander of the Faithful, our testimony is not valid unless we see the woman with our own eyes and recognize her." He said: "Do so." We heard from behind the curtain weeping and wailing. The curtain was raised, and we said to her: "Are you Shaghab, client of al-Muʿtaḍid and mother of al-Muqtadir?" She was silent for a while, then said: "Yes." We confirmed it with her, and the curtain was lowered. We paused from testifying. Al-Qāhir said: "What remains?" We said: "Do you, O Commander of the Faithful, know that she is Shaghab?" He said: "Yes, this is Shaghab, client of my father and mother of my brother." We affixed our signatures to the document. When we saw her, we saw an old woman, thin of body, dark complexion tending to white and yellow, with signs of severe distress upon her. That day we could not collect ourselves, thinking of the vicissitudes of time and the changes of fortune. We came and testified before Abū al-Ḥusayn the judge. Ibn al-Jawzī said: She died seven months and eight days after the killing of al-Muqtadir, and it seems she died in Jumādā al-Ūlā of this year. She was buried in al-Ruṣāfah. 2325 - The slave girl of Shaghab, mother of al-Muqtadir bi-llāh: Abū al-Faraj Aḥmad b. ʿUthmān b. Ibrāhīm the jurist, known as Ibn al-Narsī, said: I was sitting in the presence of my father when I was young, and with him was a group. He told me the story of how blessings reach people through fine foods. Among those present was a friend of my father, and I heard him tell my father, saying: I was present with a friend of mine, a merchant whose wealth was estimated at one hundred thousand dinars, at a banquet. He was generous and chivalrous. He brought his table, on which was a dish of dickey-rickah [a type of food]. He did not eat from it, so we refrained. He said: "Eat, for I am harmed by eating this dish." We said: "We will help you by leaving it." He said: "Rather, I will help you to eat, and I will bear the harm." So he ate. When he wanted to wash his hands, he prolonged it. I counted that he washed them forty times. I said: "Sir, have you become obsessed?" He said: "This is the harm I feared." I said: "What is its cause?" He refused to mention it, but I insisted. He said: My father died when I was twenty years old, leaving me a small fortune, capital and goods in his shop. He was a seller of old clothes in al-Karkh. When death approached, he said to me: "My son, I have no heir but you, no debt upon me, and no claim against me. When I die, prepare my burial well, give such-and-such in charity on my behalf, and arrange a pilgrimage for such-and-such. He said: and may God bless you in the rest, but keep my advice." I said: "Speak." He said: "Do not be extravagant with your wealth, lest you need what is in people's hands and not find it. Know that little with good management is much, and much with corruption is little. Stick to the market and be the first to enter it and the last to leave it. If you can enter it at dawn while it is still night, do so, for you will gain benefits that time will reveal to you." He died. I carried out his advice and followed his counsel. I used to enter the market at dawn and leave at evening. I was never without someone coming to me seeking a shroud and finding no one else open, so I sold to him; or someone selling something before the market was fully active, and I sold it for him; and other benefits. Over a year and a fraction I persisted in the market, and thus gained a good reputation among its people. They knew my uprightness and honored me. One day while I was sitting before the market was fully active, suddenly a woman rode up on an Egyptian donkey, on its rump a fine linen cloth and a servant, dressed in the attire of a stewardess (qahramānah). She reached the end of the market, then returned and dismounted at my place. I rose to her, honored her, and said: "What do you command?" I looked at her, and saw a woman more beautiful in every respect than any I had seen before or since. She said: "I want such-and-such clothes," which she requested. I heard a voice and saw a form that ravished me, and I fell deeply in love with her at once. I said: “Be patient until the people go out, then I will get that for you, for I have only a little of what is suitable for you.” So I brought out what I had, and she sat talking with me, while knives were in my heart from love of her. She uncovered fingertips I saw like the spadix of the date palm, and a face like the full moon. I rose lest the matter increase upon me, and I got for her from the market what she wanted. Its price, together with my money, was about five hundred dinars. She took it and mounted, and gave me nothing. Because of the love of her that had entered into me, it escaped me to withhold the goods from her except for payment, or to seek clues to her residence and from whose house she was. When she vanished from me, it occurred to me that she was a trickster and that this was the cause of my poverty. I became bewildered about my affair, my senses rose up, and I concealed my situation lest I be disgraced by what people were owed from me. I resolved to sell what goods were in my possession, add them to the dirhams I had, pay people their money, keep to the house, and content myself with the yield of the property I had inherited from my father. I steeled myself for affliction, and I set about that for a week — and behold, she dismounted at my place. When I saw her, I forgot everything that had befallen me and rose to her. She said, “Young man, we were delayed from you by an affair that occurred to us, and we did not doubt that you would not doubt that we had tricked you.” I said, “God has raised your rank above that.” She said, “Bring the chest from the boat.” I brought it, and she brought out fine old dinars and paid me the money in full. She produced a list of other things, paid the merchants their money, and requested from them what she wanted. I obtained in the middle a good profit. The merchants brought the garments, and I rose and appraised them with them for myself; then I sold them to her at a profit. All the while I looked at her with the gaze of one perishing from love of her, while she looked at me with the gaze of one who had noticed that and did not disapprove. I resolved to address her but did not venture. The goods were gathered, and their price was a thousand dinars. I took it, and she mounted, and I did not ask her about her whereabouts. When she vanished from me, I said: “This now is the perfected trick — she gave me [five thousand dirhams] and took a thousand dinars. There is nothing now but to sell my property and end in grinding poverty.” Then my soul indulged in seeing her even with poverty. Her absence lengthened to about a month, and the merchants pressed me with demands, so I offered my property for sale. One of the merchants stuck close to me, and I weighed out all that I [possessed of silver and gold. While I was thus, behold, she dismounted at my place. All that I was in] vanished from me at the sight of her. She called for the boat and the chest, weighed out the money, and threw me a list in which the amount exceeded two thousand dinars by far. I busied myself with bringing the merchants, paying them their money, and taking the goods from them. Talk between us lengthened, and she said, “Young man, do you have a wife?” I said, “No, by God, I have never known a woman.” That made me aspire to her, and I said: “This is the time to address her; to hold back from her is weakness. Perhaps she will return or not return.” I wanted to speak to her but feared her. I rose as if urging the merchants to gather the goods, took the servant’s hand, brought out dinars for him, and asked him to take them and fulfill a need for me. The servant said: “I will do it and convey your love to her, and I will take nothing.” I told him my story and asked him to mediate the matter between me and her. He laughed and said, “She is more in love with you than you with her. By God, she has no need of most of what she buys; she only comes to you out of love for you and to find a way to prolong her time with you. So address her with charm, and leave me, for I will settle the matter for you.” That emboldened me toward her, so I addressed her, disclosed my passion and love to her, and wept. She laughed and received that with the best reception, and said, “The servant will bring you my message.” She rose and took none of the goods. I returned them to the people, and from what she had bought the first and second times I gained thousands of dirhams in profit. Sleep did not carry me that night out of longing for her and fear that the connection would be cut. After some days the servant came to me. I honored him and asked him about her news. He said, “She is, by God, ill from her longing for you.” I said, “Explain her affair to me.” He said, “This is a slave-girl belonging to the lady [Umm al-Muqtadir, and she is one of her most favored slave-girls. She desired to see people and to go in and out, so she contrived until the lady made her a housekeeper. By God, she has told the lady your story] and wept before her, asking her to marry her to you. The lady said, ‘I will not do it until I see this man; if he is worthy of you, then yes; otherwise I will not leave you and your opinion. And it will require a ruse to bring you into the palace. If it succeeds, you will attain marriage to her; if it is discovered, your neck will be struck.’ She has sent me to you with this message, and she says to you: ‘If you can endure this, then good; otherwise, by God, there is no way for you to me, and none for me to you after it.’” What was in my soul carried me to say: “I will endure.” He said, “When night falls, cross over to al-Mukharrim, enter the mosque, and spend the night in it.” I did so. At the last part of the night, behold, a boat arrived, and servants came carrying empty chests; they set them down in the mosque and departed. The slave-girl came out, went up to the mosque, and with her was the servant I knew. She sat and dispatched the rest of the servants on errands. She summoned me, kissed me, and embraced me for a long time — I had not obtained that from her before. Then she seated me in one of the chests and locked it. The sun rose, and the servants came with garments and items from the places she had sent them to. In their presence she placed those in the remaining chests, locked them, carried them to the boat, and they set off. When I was inside it, I regretted, and said, “She has killed me for a lust.” I began blaming myself at times, encouraging myself at others, making vows for my deliverance, and at times resigning myself to death — until we reached the palace. The servants carried the chests, and the servant who knew the matter carried my chest. She hurried with my chest ahead of the other chests, walking with him while the servants carried the rest and followed her. Every time she passed a group of servants or doorkeepers, they said, “We want to search the chest,” and she shouted at them, saying, “Since when has this rule been applied to me?” So they desisted, while my spirit was at its last gasp — until she came to a servant whom she addressed as “master.” I knew he was the chief of the servants. He said, “The chest with you must be searched.” She addressed him with softness and humility, but he did not answer her. I knew she had no trick left with him, and I fainted. The chest was brought down to be opened, my senses left me, and I urinated in terror. The urine ran through the gaps of the chest. She cried out, “Master, you have destroyed our goods! There are five thousand dinars in the chest — dyed garments and rosewater that has spilled onto the garments. In a moment their colors will be ruined, and that means my destruction with the lady.” He said to her, “Take your chest to God’s curse — you and it — and go.” She shouted to the servants, “Carry it.” I was brought into the palace, and my spirit returned to me. While we were walking, she said, “Woe! By God, it is the Caliph!” Then there came to me something greater than the first. I heard the speech of servants and slave-girls, and he said among them, “Woe to you, so-and-so, what is in your chest? Show me.” She said, “Garments for my lady, my lord. I will open it before her shortly, and you will see it.” She said to the servants, “Hurry, woe to you!” So they hurried, and she brought me into a chamber and opened [the chest] for me, saying, “Climb this stairway to the upper rooms and sit there.” She quickly opened another chest, transferred some of what was in it into the chest I had been in, and locked them all. Al-Muqtadir came and said, “Open it.” She opened it, and he was satisfied with none of it and left. She went up to me and began kissing me and covering me with kisses. I came to life and forgot what had happened. She left me and locked the door of the chamber that day. Then she came to me at night, fed me, gave me drink, and departed. The next day she came to me and said, “The lady is coming now, so watch how you address her.” After an hour she returned with the lady and said, “Come down.” I came down, and there was the lady seated on a chair with no one but two servant-girls and my companion with her. I kissed the ground and stood before her. She said, “Sit.” I said, “I am the lady’s slave and servant, and it is not my place to sit in her presence.” She looked at me carefully and said, “You have chosen, so-and-so, nothing but a fair face and good manners.” The lady rose and departed. After an hour my companion came to me and said, “Rejoice, for, by God, the lady has given me permission to marry you. Nothing remains now but a way out.” I said, “May God grant safety.” The next day she carried me in the chest, and I exited as I had entered, after another risk and the terror that befell me. I alighted in the mosque and returned to my house. I gave charity and praised God for safety. After some days the servant came to me with a purse containing three thousand dinars in gold, and said, “My lady ordered me to send this to you from her own wealth, and said: ‘Buy with it garments, a mount, and servants, and set right your outward appearance. Come on the day of the procession to the public gate and stand until you are summoned, for she has obtained the Caliph’s consent to marry you in his presence.’” I answered a note that was with him, took the money, bought what they said with a small part of it, and most remained with me. On the day of the procession I rode to the public gate in fine attire. The people came and entered to the Caliph. I stood until I was summoned. I entered, and there was al-Muqtadir seated, with the commanders, the judges, and the Hashimites. I was awed by the assembly but knew how to greet and stand, and so I did. Al-Muqtadir advanced to one of the judges present, and he delivered the marriage address for me and married me. I left his presence. When I was in one of the corridors near the gate, I was turned aside to a great house furnished with fine furnishings of every kind, containing of utensils, servants, goods, and fabrics everything the like of which I had never seen. I was seated there and left alone, and those who had brought me in departed. I sat all day not seeing anyone I knew, and I did not leave my place except for prayer. Servants came and went, food was brought, and they said, “Tonight so-and-so — by the name of my companion — will be presented to her husband the cloth merchant.” I could hardly believe it for joy. When night came, hunger affected me. The doors were locked, and I despaired of the slave-girl. I rose and went around the house. I came upon the kitchen and found the cooks sitting. I asked them for food, but they did not know me. One of the stewards recognized me, and they brought me this dish of cooked food with two loaves. I ate them, washed my hands with potash that was in the kitchen, and judged that they had been cleaned. I returned to my place. When night fell, there were drums, pipes, and great sounds, and the doors were opened. My companion was presented to me, and they brought her and unveiled her before me, while I thought it was a dream for joy. She was left with me in the hall, and the people dispersed. When we were alone, I went to her and kissed her, and she kissed me. She smelled my beard and kicked me, throwing me off the dais, and said, “I knew you would never succeed, commoner, you low fellow!” She rose to leave. I rose, clung to her, kissed the ground and her feet, and said, “Tell me my sin, and after that do what you will.” She said, “Woe to you, you ate and did not wash your hand.” I told her my story. When I reached its end, I said, “I swear — I swear by divorcing her, by divorcing every woman I marry, by giving all my wealth as charity, by making the pilgrimage on foot, by disbelief in God, and by everything Muslims swear by — that after this I will never eat dikayrikah without washing my hands forty times.” She took pity, smiled, and called out, “Slave-girls!” About ten slave-girls and servants came, and she said, “Bring something for us to eat.” Fine dishes and food of the caliphs’ foods were served. We ate and washed our hands, and the servants left. Then we rose to the bed, and I consummated the marriage with her and passed a night of the caliphs’ nights. We did not part for a week, and on the seventh day there was a huge banquet at which the slave-girls gathered. The next day she said, “The Caliph’s palace does not permit us to stay longer than this. Had permission not been sought and granted only with great effort, this would not have been accomplished for us, for it is a thing never done before with any slave-girl but me, out of my lady’s love for me. Everything you see is a gift from the lady to me, and she has given me fifty thousand dinars in gold, silver, jewels, and stored treasures outside the palace, of every kind, and all of it is for you. Go out to your house, take money with you, buy a splendid house with a spacious courtyard and a large garden with many fine trees in an excellent location, move to it, and let me know so I may transfer all of this to you. When it is with you, I will come to you.” She handed me ten thousand dinars in gold, and the servant carried it with me. I bought the house and wrote her the news. She conveyed to me all that blessing, and everything I am in now is from her. She stayed with me for such and such years, and I lived with her the life of caliphs, while I continued trading. My wealth increased, my status grew, and my condition flourished. She bore me these young men — and he pointed to his children. Then she died, may God Almighty have mercy on her, and I retain from the harm of the dikayrikah what you have witnessed. Among those who died in this year: ʿAbd al-Salām b. Muḥammad b. ʿAbd al-Wahhāb b. Salām b. Khālid b. Ḥumrān b. Abān, client of ʿUthmān b. ʿAffān, and he is Abū Hāshim b. Abī ʿAlī al-Jubbāʾī, the theologian, son of the theologian, the Muʿtazilite, son of the Muʿtazilite. To him is traced the Bahshamiyyah among the Muʿtazilah. He has works on Muʿtazilism as his father had before him. His birth was in the year two hundred forty-seven, and he died in Shaʿbān of this year. The judge Ibn Khallikān said: He had a son named Abū ʿAlī. One day he entered upon al-Ṣāḥib b. ʿAbbād, who honored and respected him and asked him about something. He said, “I do not know — half of knowledge.” Al-Ṣāḥib said, “You have spoken the truth, and your father preceded you to the other half!” Muḥammad b. al-Ḥasan b. Durayd b. ʿAtāhiyah, Abū Bakr b. Durayd al-Azdī The lexicographer, grammarian, and poet, author of the Maqṣūrah, was born in Basra in the year 223 AH, and he traveled through the lands seeking knowledge and literature. His father was a man of means. He came to Baghdad when he was elderly, and he resided there until he died. He narrated from ʿAbd al-Raḥmān, the nephew of al-Aṣmaʿī, Abū Ḥātim, and al-Riyāshī. From him narrated Abū Saʿīd al-Sīrāfī, Abū Bakr b. Shādhān, Abū ʿUbayd Allāh al-Marzubānī, and others. It is said: he was the most learned of the poets and the most poetic of the scholars. He was notorious for wine-drinking. Abū Manṣūr al-Azharī said: I entered upon him and found him drunk, so I never returned to him. Al-Dāraquṭnī was asked about him, and he said: They spoke ill of him. Ibn Shāhīn said: We used to enter upon him, and we would feel ashamed of what we saw of the hanging lutes and the clarified wine, and he had passed ninety and was approaching one hundred. His death was on Wednesday, twelve nights remaining of Shaʿbān. On that day was the death of Abū Hāshim b. Abī ʿAlī, so the funeral prayer was performed for both of them together, and they were buried in the Khaizurān cemetery. People said: Today died the science of language and the science of kalām. That day was rainy. Among Ibn Duraid's works are "al-Jamharah" on language, in about ten volumes, the book "al-Maṭar" (Rain), the Maqṣūrah, and the other ode on the shortened and lengthened forms, and other things. May God pardon him.
