Translation

✧ Mention of the killing of Muʾnis, Bulayq, his son ʿAlī, and al-Nawbakhtī In this year, in Shaʿbān, al-Qāhir killed Muʾnis al-Muẓaffar, Bulayq, and ʿAlī b. Bulayq. The reason for their killing was that Muʾnis's followers rioted and rose up, followed by the rest of the troops, and they burned the lattice-work window of the vizier Abū Jaʿfar's residence, called out with Muʾnis's slogan, and said: "We will not be satisfied except with the release of Muʾnis." Al-Qāhir had already captured ʿAlī b. Bulayq, and he had isolated each of them in a separate house. When the troops rioted, al-Qāhir entered upon ʿAlī b. Bulayq, and ordered him to be slaughtered. His head was cut off and placed in a basin. Then al-Qāhir proceeded with the basin carried before him until he entered upon Bulayq. He placed the basin before him, and in it was his son's head. When he saw it, he wept, took it, and kissed it and sipped from it. Al-Qāhir ordered him to be slaughtered too, and his head was placed in a basin and carried before al-Qāhir. He went on until he entered upon Muʾnis and placed the two heads before him. When he saw the two heads, he uttered the shahādah, said "innā li-llāhi wa-innā ilayhi rājiʿūn," and cursed their killer. Al-Qāhir said: "Drag the cursed dog by his leg!" They dragged him and slaughtered him and placed his head in a basin. He ordered that the heads be paraded around both sides of Baghdād, and it was proclaimed over them: "This is the reward of one who betrays the Imam and seeks to corrupt his state." Then they were returned, cleaned, and placed in the head-storehouse, as was customary. It is said that he killed Bulayq and his son secretly, then later he caught his son and ordered him to be beaten. Ibn Bulayq turned to al-Qāhir and cursed him with the ugliest cursing and the greatest abuse. Al-Qāhir ordered him to be killed, and his head was paraded around both sides of Baghdād. Then he sent to Ibn Yaʿqūb al-Nawbakhtī, who was in the assembly of his vizier Muḥammad b. al-Qāsim, seized him, and imprisoned him. People saw from the severity of al-Qāhir what made them know that they would not be safe from his hand. Everyone who had helped him—the Subukīs, the Sājiyya, and the Ḥujariyya—regretted it, but regret did not avail them.
