Translation

✧ Mention of Muʾnis's seizure of al-Mawṣil We have already mentioned Muʾnis's march to al-Mawṣil. When the vizier al-Ḥusayn heard of his march, he wrote to Saʿīd and Dāwūd, the two sons of Ḥamdān, and to their nephew Nāṣir al-Dawlah b. ʿAbd Allāh b. Ḥamdān, ordering them to fight Muʾnis and block him from al-Mawṣil. On his way, Muʾnis had written to the Arab chieftains summoning them, offering them money and robes of honor, and telling them that the caliph had appointed him over al-Mawṣil and Diyār Rabīʿah. The Banū Ḥamdān agreed to fight Muʾnis, except Dāwūd b. Ḥamdān, who held back from that because of Muʾnis's kindness to him, for he had taken him as a child after his father and raised him in his care, treating him with great kindness. When he refused to fight him, his brothers kept at him until he agreed, reminding him of the offense committed against al-Muqtadir time after time by al-Ḥusayn and Abū al-Hayjāʾ, the two sons of Ḥamdān, and that they wished to wash away that offense. When he went along with them, he said to them: "By God, you are making me commit injustice and ingratitude for kindness, and I do not feel safe from a stray arrow coming to me and landing in my throat and killing me." When they met, an arrow came to him just as he described and killed him. Whenever someone said to Muʾnis, "Dāwūd is determined to fight you," he denied it and said, "How could he fight me when I took him as a child and raised him in my care?" When Muʾnis drew near al-Mawṣil, he had eight hundred horsemen, while the Banū Ḥamdān gathered in thirty thousand. They met and fought, and the Banū Ḥamdān were routed. None of them was killed except Dāwūd, who was nicknamed al-Mujafjaf. About him a poet said, satirizing a prince: If you were in a thousand thousand, all of them heroes like al-Mujafjaf Dāwūd b. Ḥamdān, with the wind beneath you running wherever you command it, and in your right hand a sword that never fails, you would still be the first to flee to ʿAdan when a sword from Khurāsān stirs. This Dāwūd was one of the bravest of people. Muʾnis entered al-Mawṣil on the third of Ṣafar and seized the wealth of the Banū Ḥamdān and their dwellings. Many troops came out to him from Baghdād, al-Shām, and Miṣr, from various sorts of people, because of his kindness to them. Nāṣir al-Dawlah b. Ḥamdān returned to him and became his ally, and he stayed in al-Mawṣil for nine months and resolved to go down to Baghdād.
