✧ Those of the notables who died in the year 318 AH Ibrāhīm b. Aḥmad b. Muḥammad b. Ibrāhīm b. Muṭarrif b. Muḥammad b. ʿAlī, Abū Isḥāq al-Istirābādhī: He heard from Abū Khalīfah, Abū Yaʿlā al-Mawṣilī, and others. He was trustworthy, a jurist, virtuous, and reliable. He died in this year while still a young man. Aḥmad b. Isḥāq b. al-Buhlūl b. Ḥassān b. Sinān, Abū Jaʿfar al-Tanūkhī: Of Anbari origin, he was born in the year 231 AH, and heard from his father, Ibrāhīm b. Saʿīd al-Jawharī, Muʾammil b. Ihāb, Abū Saʿīd al-Ashajj, Abū Hishām al-Rifāʿī, and many others. He had only one ḥadīth from Abū Kurayb. Al-Dāraquṭnī and others narrated from him. He was trustworthy, a jurist following the school of Abū Ḥanīfah, proficient in grammar according to the Kufan school, eloquent in expression, with extensive memorization of ancient and modern poetry, biographies, and exegesis. He was a poet, eloquent, sharp-tongued, pious, and strict in judicial matters. His household was a house of learning: people took knowledge from his father, his grandfather, from him, from his son [Muḥammad], and from his nephew Dāwūd b. al-Haytham b. Isḥāq. Abū Jaʿfar held the judgeship of al-Anbār, Hīt, and the Euphrates route on behalf of al-Muwaffaq bi-llāh in the year 276 AH. Then he held it for al-Muʿtaḍid. Then he was appointed over some districts of al-Jabal [for al-Muktafī] in the year 292 AH, but he did not go out to them. Then al-Muqtadir appointed him in the year 296 AH, after the fitnah of Ibn al-Muʿtazz, to the judgeship of Madīnat al-Manṣūr, the ṭasūjī of Quṭrubbul, Maskan, al-Anbār, the Euphrates route, and Hīt. After some years, he added to him the judgeship of the districts of al-Ahwāz collectively when their judge Wakīʿ died. He remained in these posts until he was dismissed in the year 317 AH. From Abū al-Ḥasan Aḥmad b. Yūsuf al-Azraq, who said: The judge Abū Ṭālib Muḥammad b. al-Qāḍī Abī Jaʿfar b. al-Buhlūl narrated to me, saying: I was with my father at a funeral, and beside him was [Abū Jaʿfar] al-Ṭabarī. My father began [exhorting] the bereaved [and consoling him], reciting poetry to him, and relating reports to him. Al-Ṭabarī joined him in that [and added comments]. Then the matter expanded between them into discussion, and they branched into many fields of literature and knowledge which those present admired. The day grew long and we parted. My father said to me: “My son, do you know this shaykh who joined us today in discussion, who he is?” I said: “This is Abū Jaʿfar [Muḥammad b. Jarīr] al-Ṭabarī.” He said: “Indeed we belong to God! You have not done well by me, my son.” I said: “How so?” He said: “Why did you not tell me, so that I could have discussed with him differently! This is a man famous for memorization and breadth in various fields of knowledge, and I did not discuss with him in the best manner.” He said: A period passed, and we attended another funeral, and there was al-Ṭabarī. I said to him: “O judge, this is al-Ṭabarī, he has come.” He gestured for him to sit by him. He sat beside him, and my father began [to engage him]. Whenever he came to a poem, al-Ṭabarī would cite some verses from it, and my father would say to him: “Recite it fully, O Abū Jaʿfar,” but al-Ṭabarī would falter, and [my father] would recite it to the end. And whenever he mentioned anything from the biographies, my father would say: “This was in the story of so-and-so and the day of the Banū so-and-so; go through it, O Abū Jaʿfar.” Sometimes he would go through it, and sometimes he would falter, and my father would go through the whole of it. My father did not fall silent that day until noon, and it became clear to those present that al-Ṭabarī fell short of him. Then we rose, and my father said to me: “Now I have satisfied my heart.” From the judge Abū al-Ḥusayn [ʿAlī b.] Muḥammad b. Abī Jaʿfar b. al-Buhlūl, who said: The Lady Umm al-Muqtadir bi-llāh requested from my grandfather the waqf deed for an estate she had purchased. The waqf deed was [kept] in the judicial archive, and she wanted to take it to burn it and take possession of the waqf, while my grandfather did not know of this. He carried it to the palace and said to the stewardess: “I have brought the deed; what do you command?” They said: “We want it to remain with us.” He sensed the matter, and said to Umm Mūsā the stewardess: “Tell [Umm al-Muqtadir] the Lady: Fear God! This, by God, is something I will never permit. I am the keeper of the Muslims’ judicial archive. If you enable me to guard it as is required, fine; otherwise dismiss me and take over the archive all at once, and do with it what you will. But as for doing anything of this sort by my hand, by God, it will never happen, even if I were threatened with the sword.” He rose with the deed in his hand, [and went to his boat, not doubting that he would be dismissed. He went up to Ibn al-Furāt] and told him the story. He said [to him]: “Would that you had held back from answering and informed me, so that I could write [and dictate] about it. Now you are dismissed, and I have no device with the Lady regarding your matter.” He said: The stewardess delivered the message to the Lady, and she complained to al-Muqtadir. [On the day of the audience, al-Muqtadir addressed him] orally about it, and he explained the situation to him and said to him the same words and request for dismissal. Al-Muqtadir said to him: “One like you, O Aḥmad, who has been entrusted with the judiciary? Remain as you are, may God bless you, and do not fear that your standing with us will be diminished.” He said: When the Lady returned to the matter, al-Muqtadir said to her: “Legal rulings are not to be toyed with. Ibn al-Buhlūl is trustworthy to us and loves our dynasty. If this were permissible, I would not withhold it from you.” The Lady said: “Is this not permissible?” He said to her: “No. This is a ruse by the waqf trustees to sell it. Her scribe Ibn [ʿAbd] al-Ḥamīd explained the matter to her: that the purchase is not valid by tearing up the waqf deed, and that this is not lawful.” So she returned the money, rescinded the purchase, and went back to thanking my grandfather, and the matter turned out well in their view. My grandfather said after that: “Whoever puts God’s command before the command of creatures, God suffices him against their evil.” Abū Jaʿfar b. al-Buhlūl died in Rabīʿ al-Ākhir of this year. Ibn ʿUqdah narrated from al-Ḥaḍramī that he said: “He is a liar,” but this is not correct. From Abū al-Ḥasan b. Sufyān al-Ḥāfiẓ, who said: [Muḥammad] b. al-Ḥusayn al-Lakhmī was trustworthy, of good doctrine, a man of the congregation, commanding right and forbidding wrong. He was among those asked to be a witness, but he refused that. He died in this year, though it has also been said that he died in the year 310 AH. Muḥammad b. al-Ḥusayn b. Saʿīd b. Abān, Abū Jaʿfar al-Hamadhānī, known as al-Ṭannān: He came to Baghdad and narrated there from Aḥmad b. Muḥammad b. Rashdīn al-Miṣrī. Al-Dāraquṭnī narrated from him and said: He is trustworthy. Some ḥuffāẓ said: He is not satisfactory. [He died in this year.] Yaḥyā b. Muḥammad b. Ṣāʿid, Abū Muḥammad, client of Abū Jaʿfar al-Manṣūr: He was born in the year 228 AH, traveled in pursuit of ḥadīth to various lands, wrote, memorized, and heard from Luwayn, Aḥmad b. Manīʿ, Bundār, Muḥammad b. al-Muthannā, al-Bukhārī, and many others. He first wrote ḥadīth from al-Ḥasan b. ʿĪsā b. Māsarjas in the year 239 AH. Among the notables who narrated from him were ʿAbd Allāh b. Muḥammad al-Baghawī, al-Jiʿābī, Ibn al-Muẓaffar, Ibn Ḥayawayh, al-Dāraquṭnī, and Ibn Shāhīn. He was trustworthy and reliable, one of the great ḥuffāẓ of ḥadīth, and among those devoted to it. He composed works on the Sunan that demonstrate his fiqh [and understanding]. From the judge Abū Bakr Muḥammad b. ʿUmar al-Dāwūdī, who said: I heard a shaykh from the ḥadīth scholars, of good appearance, whose name I do not remember, say: A man came to Yaḥyā b. Ṣāʿid to read to him something from his ḥadīth. He had with him a juzʾ from Abū al-Qāsim al-Baghawī from a group of his shaykhs. He made a mistake and read it to Ibn Ṣāʿid while he listened attentively. Then he said to him afterwards: “O shaykh, I made a mistake in reading this juzʾ to you; it is not from your ḥadīth, but rather from the ḥadīth of Abū al-Qāsim al-Baghawī.” Yaḥyā said to him: “What you read to me is my hearing from the shaykhs from whom you read it.” Then he rose, brought out his originals, and showed him each ḥadīth that he had read on the shaykh whose name was written in the juzʾ. Yaḥyā died in Dhū al-Qiʿdah of this year at the age of ninety, and was buried at Bāb al-Kūfah. Among the notables who died in this year: Al-Ḥasan b. ʿAlī b. Aḥmad b. Bashshār b. He composed a resounding elegy for a cat of his that his neighbors killed because it ate the young of their pigeons from their towers. It contains refinement and tenderness. It is said that he intended by it to elegize Ibn al-Muʿtazz, but he did not dare to attribute it to him because of the Caliph al-Muqtadir bi-llāh when he killed him. Its opening is: O cat, you have left us and will not return, And you were to me like a child. It consists of sixty-five verses.
