✧ The restoration of al-Muqtadir to the caliphate When Monday, the seventeenth of al-Muḥarram, came, the people went early to the caliph's palace because it was the day of the procession of a new dynasty, and the passageways, stalls, courtyards, and the bank of the Tigris were filled with people. The Maṣāffī infantry appeared in full armor, demanding the right of the pledge of allegiance and a year's stipend, and they were enraged at what Nāzūk had done to them. Muʾnis al-Muẓaffar did not attend that day. The shouts of the infantry rose, and Nāzūk heard them, and he feared that strife and fighting might break out between them and his companions, so he went ahead to his companions and ordered them not to confront them or fight them. The clamor of the infantry increased, and they rushed, wanting the Tisʿīnī court, and Nāzūk's companions did not stop them. Those who were on the bank entered with weapons, and their shouts drew near to al-Qāhir bi-llāh's assembly, where Abū ʿAlī b. Muqla the vizier, Nāzūk, and Abū al-Hayjāʾ b. Ḥamdān were with him. Al-Qāhir said to Nāzūk, "Go out to them, calm them, and soothe their hearts!" So Nāzūk went out to them while he was drunk, having drunk throughout his night. When the infantry saw him, they advanced toward him to complain to him about their situation regarding their stipends. But when he saw them with swords in their hands heading toward him, he feared them for his own safety and fled. They then became bold with him and pursued him, and his flight ended at a gate that he himself had blocked the day before. They caught up with him there and killed him at that gate, and before him they killed his servant ʿAjīb. They shouted, "O Muqtadir! O Manṣūr!" Then everyone in the palace fled—the vizier, the chamberlains, and all the other ranks—and the palace remained empty. They crucified Nāzūk and ʿAjīb where those on the bank of the Tigris could see them. Then the infantry went to Muʾnis's house, shouting and demanding al-Muqtadir from him. The servants rushed and locked the gates of the caliph's palace, and all of them were al-Muqtadir's servants, mamlūks, and protégés. Abū al-Hayjāʾ b. Ḥamdān wanted to leave the palace, but al-Qāhir clung to him and said, "I am under your protection." He replied, "By God, I will never abandon you," and he took al-Qāhir's hand and said, "Come, let us leave together, and I will summon my companions and my kinsmen, and they will fight with you and for you." So the two rose to leave, but they found the gates locked. Fāʾiq Wajh al-Qaṣʿa followed them, walking with them. Al-Qāhir looked out from a rooftop and saw the great crowd, so he and Ibn Ḥamdān and Fāʾiq came down. Ibn Ḥamdān said to al-Qāhir, "Stay here until I come back to you." He took off his black garments and clothes, took a woolen jubbah belonging to a servant there, put it on, and walked toward the Nūbī Gate. He found it locked, with people behind it, so he returned to al-Qāhir. Wajh al-Qaṣʿa and the servants with him fell back from the two, and Wajh al-Qaṣʿa ordered them to kill the two, seeking revenge for al-Muqtadir and what they had done to him. Ten servants returned to them with weapons, but Abū al-Hayjāʾ came back at them with his sword in his hand, took off the woolen jubbah and held it in his other hand, and charged them. They scattered before him, but when he closed in on them, they shot arrows at him out of necessity, so he turned back from them. Al-Qāhir separated from him and walked to the far end of the garden and hid there. Abū al-Hayjāʾ entered a teak-wood room, and the servants advanced toward that room. He came out at them, and they turned and fled. Some of the senior Ḥujarī servants entered, accompanied by two black soldiers with weapons, and they made for Abū al-Hayjāʾ. He came out at them and was struck by arrows and fell. One of them went to him and struck him with a sword, cutting off his right hand, and took his head and carried it away with him. As for the infantry, when they reached Muʾnis's house and he heard their shouts, he said, "What do you want?" He was told, "We want al-Muqtadir." So he ordered him to be handed over to them. When al-Muqtadir was told to come out, he feared for his life that it might be a trick against him, so he refused. He was carried and brought out to them, and the infantry carried him on their shoulders until they brought him into the caliph's palace. When he reached the Tisʿīnī court, he felt at ease and sat down. He asked about his brother al-Qāhir and about Ibn Ḥamdān, and he was told that the two were alive. So he wrote a safe-conduct for them in his own hand and ordered a servant to hurry with the letter of safe-conduct so that no harm might befall Abū al-Hayjāʾ. The servant went with the letter, and another servant met him carrying a head, and he returned with him. When al-Muqtadir saw him and was told of his killing, he said, "Indeed we belong to God, and indeed to Him we return! Who killed him?" The servant said, "We do not know his killer." His killing weighed heavily upon him, and he said, "No one used to come in to me and console me and drive away my grief these days but him." Then al-Qāhir was taken and brought before al-Muqtadir. He called him near and seated him beside him, kissed his forehead, and said to him, "O brother, I know that you have no fault and that you were coerced. If they had titled you al-Maqhūr, it would have been more fitting than al-Qāhir." Al-Qāhir wept and said, "O Commander of the Faithful! My life, my life! Remember the kinship between me and you!" Al-Muqtadir said to him, "By the right of the Messenger of God, no harm will ever come to you from me, and no one will reach you with anything hateful while I am alive!" So he was reassured. The head of Nāzūk and the head of Abū al-Hayjāʾ were brought out and paraded, and it was proclaimed over them: "This is the recompense of one who disobeys his master." As for Bunnayy b. Nafīs, he had been one of the severest of the people against al-Muqtadir. The news of his return to the caliphate reached him, so he mounted a swift horse and fled from Baghdad, changing his appearance. He traveled until he reached Mosul, then went from there to Armenia, and traveled until he entered Constantinople and became a Christian. Abū al-Sarāyā Naṣr b. Ḥamdān, the brother of Abū al-Hayjāʾ, fled to Mosul, and the strife subsided. Al-Muqtadir summoned Abū ʿAlī b. Muqla and restored him to his vizierate. He released the soldiers' stipends to them and increased them, sold the goods and jewels in the treasuries, and permitted the sale of estates to the people. These were sold at the cheapest prices in order to complete the soldiers' pay. It has been said that Muʾnis al-Muẓaffar did not favor what had happened to al-Muqtadir regarding his deposition, but rather he agreed with the group only because his opinion was overruled and because he knew that if he opposed them, it would not benefit al-Muqtadir. He agreed with them so that they would trust him, and he worked with the Maṣāffī and Ḥujarī servant-soldiers and incited their commanders until they did what they did and restored al-Muqtadir to the caliphate. He had said to al-Muqtadir when he was in his house, "What do you want us to do?" For this reason al-Muqtadir granted him safety. When they carried him to the caliph's palace from Muʾnis's house and he saw the great crowd and confusion in it, he returned to Muʾnis's house because of his trust in him and his reliance upon him. Had it not been for Muʾnis's inclination toward al-Muqtadir, he would have been present with al-Qāhir along with the group, for he was not with them as we have mentioned, and he would also have killed al-Muqtadir when he was requested from his house to be restored to the caliphate. As for al-Qāhir, al-Muqtadir confined him with his own mother, and she treated him well, honored him, and was generous with his allowance. She bought him concubines and slave girls for service and went to great lengths in honoring him and being good to him in every way. Ibn Muqla returned and wrote to the provinces informing them of al-Muqtadir's restoration, and affairs in Baghdad returned to their former state.
