His father transmitted to him and took him around east and west, and he heard from the scholars of the time, and he compiled books. He was a learned, discerning man, one of the great ḥuffāẓ. The ruler set up a pulpit for him, and he transmitted from it. In his time there were learned shaykhs, but they did not attain the precision he attained. The vizier ʿĪsā b. ʿAlī b. ʿĪsā used to transmit in his house, and he would say: Al-Baghawī transmitted to us in that place, pointing to a spot in the house, and Ibn Ṣāʿid transmitted to us, pointing to another spot, and he would mention a group, pointing to their places. It was said to him: Why do you not mention Ibn Abī Dāwūd? He said: Would that, when we went to his house, he would permit us to enter. From Abū al-Qāsim al-Azharī, who said: I heard Aḥmad b. Ibrāhīm b. Shādhān say: Abū Bakr b. Abī Dāwūd went out to Sijistān in the days of ʿAmr b. al-Layth. The companions of ḥadīth gathered around him and asked him to transmit to them, but he refused, saying: I do not have a book with me. They said to him: Ibn Abī Dāwūd and (no) book? He said: They incited me, so I dictated to them thirty thousand ḥadīths from my memory. When I arrived in Baghdad, the Baghdadi scholars said: Ibn Abī Dāwūd went to Sijistān and played with the people. Then they dispatched a courier whom they hired for six dinars to Sijistān to write down the copy for them. It was written and brought to Baghdad, and it was presented to the ḥuffāẓ. They found me mistaken in six ḥadīths, three of which I had transmitted as I had transmitted them, and three in which I had erred. From Aḥmad b. Muḥammad al-ʿAtīqī, who said: I heard Ṭalḥah b. Muḥammad b. Jaʿfar say: I heard Abū Bakr b. Abī Dāwūd say: One day I passed by Bāb al-Ṭāq, and there was a man interpreting dreams. A man passed by him and gave him a coin, saying: Last night I saw as if I were being demanded the dowry of a woman, though I have never married. He returned the coin to him and said: There is no answer to this. I stepped forward and said to him: Take the coin from him so that I may interpret for you. He took the coin, and I said to the man: You are being demanded the land tax of a plot that is not yours. He said: By God, that is it! The tax collector is with me. Abū Bakr died on Monday, the seventeenth of Dhū al-Ḥijjah of this year, at the age of eighty-six years, six months, and some days. Around three hundred thousand prayed over him. Then those who arrived continued to pray over him until prayer was performed over him eighty times, until al-Muqtadir sent Banāzūk, who cleared the way for his funeral, and he was buried in the cemetery of Bāb al-Bustān. He left behind three sons and three daughters. Muḥammad b. Isḥāq, Abū al-ʿAbbās al-Ṣayrafī, the witness Muḥammad b. Isḥāq, Abū al-ʿAbbās al-Ṣayrafī, the witness: He reported from al-Zubayr b. Bakkār.
