Translation
✧ The beginning of the estrangement between al-Muqtadir and Muʾnis In the year 315 AH, the Byzantines stirred, aiming for the frontier strongholds. They entered Sumaysāṭ and plundered all that was in it of wealth, weapons, and other things, and they struck the nāqūs in the congregational mosque at the times of prayer. Then the Muslims went out in pursuit of the Byzantines, fought them, and gained from them a great amount of booty. So al-Muqtadir billāh ordered the armies to be equipped with Muʾnis al-Muẓaffar, and al-Muqtadir bestowed robes of honor upon him in Rabīʿ al-Ākhir, so that he might set out. When nothing remained but the farewell, Muʾnis refused to enter the caliph’s palace for the farewell, and he became estranged from al-Muqtadir billāh, and that became apparent. The reason for it was that a servant from among al-Muqtadir’s servants told Muʾnis that al-Muqtadir billāh had ordered his private servants to dig a pit in the Dār al-Shajarah, to cover it with wood shavings and earth, and he said that he would sit in it for Muʾnis’s farewell; when he came and approached it, the servants would cast him into it and strangle him, and display him as dead. So Muʾnis refused to enter the caliph’s palace, and all the troops rode to him, among them ʿAbd Allāh b. Ḥamdān and his brothers, and the caliph’s palace was emptied. They said to Muʾnis: “We will fight before you until a beard grows for you.” Al-Muqtadir sent him a note in his own handwriting swearing to him that what had reached him was false. So Muʾnis dismissed the army and wrote in reply that he was the owned slave, and that the one who conveyed that to him had been put up by someone who wanted to estrange him from his master; that he had not summoned the soldiers—rather, they had come—and he had already dispersed them. So his mind was set at ease, and he rode to the caliph’s palace with a few servants. When he entered upon the caliph, he addressed him with a mighty address and swore to him that his heart was sound toward him, and that he had toward him the sincerity that he knew. He departed from his presence esteemed and honored. Abū al-ʿAbbās b. al-Muqtadir, the vizier ʿAlī b. ʿĪsā, and Naṣr al-Ḥājib rode in his service to bid him farewell, with the chief commanders before him like chamberlains. His departure was a witnessed day, heading for the frontier lands to fight the Byzantines. When the vizier ʿAlī b. ʿĪsā and Naṣr al-Ḥājib, who were with him, reached the house of Mubārak al-Qummī, he made them swear that they would turn back. So they diverted to the bank of the Tigris and departed in their skiffs. The rest of the commanders and the two ustādhs went with him to his camp. Sulaymān b. al-Ḥasan rode alongside him, and Hārūn b. Gharīb, Yalbaq, Bushrā, Nāzūk, and Ṭarīf al-ʿAskarī walked before him as chamberlains walk. Muʾnis departed from his camp on Sunday, with two nights remaining of Rabīʿ al-Ākhir.
