He was brownish-dark (asmar ilā al-adamah), with large eyes, of medium build, tall, and eloquent of tongue. He heard Muḥammad b. ʿAbd al-Malik b. Abī al-Shawārib, Isḥāq b. [Abī] Isrāʾīl, Aḥmad b. Kāmil al-Qāḍī and others narrated from him. Ibn Jarīr settled in Baghdad until his death. He had gathered such knowledge that he was the foremost scholar of his time. He had memorized the Qurʾān, was insightful in its meanings, learned in the Sunnah, a jurist in legal rulings, knowledgeable about the disagreements of scholars, and expert in the chronicles and reports of people. His works are numerous, among them the book "al-Tārīkh" (the History), the book "al-Tafsīr" (the Commentary), and "Tahdhīb al-Āthār," though he did not complete that work. He also has many books on the principles and branches of jurisprudence. From Abū Bakr Aḥmad b. [ʿAlī b. Thābit] al-Khaṭīb, who said: [I heard] ʿAlī b. ʿUbayd Allāh b. ʿAbd al-Ghaffār al-Lughawī relate that Muḥammad b. Jarīr spent forty years writing forty pages every day. From Abū ʿUmar ʿUbayd Allāh b. Aḥmad al-Simsār and Abū al-Qāsim b. ʿAqīl al-Warrāq: Abū Jaʿfar al-Ṭabarī said to his companions, "Would you be willing to undertake a commentary on the Qurʾān?" They said, "How large would it be?" He said, "Thirty thousand pages." They said, "That is something that would consume lifetimes before its completion." So he abridged it to about three thousand pages. Then he said, "Would you be willing to undertake a history of the world from Adam to our time?" They said, "How large would it be?" He mentioned something similar to what he had mentioned for the commentary, and they responded likewise. He said, "Indeed, to God we belong—ambitions have died." So he abridged it to about the same extent as the abridged commentary. From Makhlad b. Jaʿfar al-Daqqāq, who said: Muḥammad b. Jarīr al-Ṭabarī recited to us: If I am in hardship, my companion does not know, and I remain self-sufficient, so my friend stays at ease; My modesty preserves the water of my face, And my gentleness in seeking is my companion; If I were to surrender my face, The path to wealth would be easy for me. He said: He also recited to us: Two traits whose path I do not approve: The arrogance of wealth and the abasement of poverty. If you are rich, do not be arrogant; And if you are poor, be proud before fate. Abū Jaʿfar [al-Ṭabarī] died at sunset on Sunday evening, two nights remaining in Shawwāl of the year 310. He was buried in the forenoon of Monday in the Raḥbat Yaʿqūb, near the Khurasan Gate, in a room opposite his house. It is also said that he was buried at night without anyone being informed. A crowd whose number only God knows gathered, and prayers were said over his grave for several months, night and day. Thābit b. Sinān mentioned in his history that the concealment of his affair occurred only because the common people gathered and [prevented] his burial by day, claiming he was a Rāfiḍī, and even claiming he was a heretic (ilḥād). Ibn al-Jawzī said: Ibn Jarīr held the view of [the permissibility of] wiping over the feet without requiring their washing, and for this reason he was accused of Rāfiḍism. Abū Bakr b. Abī Dāwūd had submitted a complaint about him to Naṣr al-Ḥājib, mentioning things he denied, including attributing to him the view of Jahm and saying that in "nay, His hands are outspread" (Q 5:64) he interpreted "hands" as "bounties." Ibn Jarīr denied this, saying, "I did not say that." Another item was that he allegedly narrated that when the soul of the Messenger of God ﷺ departed, it flowed into ʿAlī's palm and he swallowed it (ḥasāhā). Ibn Jarīr said, "The hadith only says he wiped it over his face; it does not say he swallowed it." Ibn al-Jawzī [may God have mercy on him] said: This too is impossible. However, Ibn Jarīr wrote in response to this to Naṣr al-Ḥājib: "There is no faction in Islam like this vile faction." This is ugly of him, because it would have been appropriate for him to argue against those who argued with him; but to disparage an entire group while knowing to which group they belong is the height of ugliness. ʿAlī b. ʿĪsā used to say: "By God, if these people were asked about the meaning of Rāfiḍism and heresy, they would not know or understand it." Thus did Ibn Miskawayh, author of "Tajārib al-Umam," mention it; but that imam is far above such things. As for what was mentioned about the fanaticism of the common people, the matter is not so; rather, some of the Ḥanbalīs showed fanaticism against him and attacked him, and others followed them. There was a reason for this, namely that al-Ṭabarī compiled a book in which he mentioned the disagreements of the jurists, a work without equal, but did not mention Aḥmad b. Ḥanbal in it. He was asked about that, and he said, "He was not a jurist; he was only a hadith scholar." This was hard on the Ḥanbalīs, who were beyond count in Baghdad, and they rose up against him and said what they wanted: They envied the young man when they could not attain his effort, So the people are enemies and adversaries to him, Like co-wives of a beautiful woman who say of her face, Out of envy and spite, "It is ugly." I have mentioned something of the statements of the imams about Abū Jaʿfar from which his standing in knowledge, trustworthiness, and sound belief may be known. Among them is what Imam Abū Bakr al-Khaṭīb said after mentioning those from whom al-Ṭabarī narrated and those who narrated from al-Ṭabarī: "He was one of the imams of the scholars whose word was authoritative and whose opinion was relied upon for his knowledge and excellence. He had gathered such knowledge as no one of his time shared with him. He had memorized the Book of God, was knowledgeable in the readings, insightful in meanings, a jurist in the rulings of the Qurʾān, learned in the Sunnah and its paths, its sound and unsound, its abrogating and abrogated, knowledgeable in the sayings of the Companions and the Successors and those after them in rulings and questions of lawful and unlawful, expert in the chronicles and reports of people. He has the famous book on the history of nations and kings, and the book on commentary, the like of which has not been compiled. He has many books on the principles and branches of jurisprudence and reports from the statements of jurists. He was unique in certain questions that were preserved from him." Abū Aḥmad al-Ḥusayn b. ʿAlī b. Muḥammad al-Rāzī said: The first thing Imam Abū Bakr b. Khuzaymah asked me was: "Have you written from Muḥammad b. Jarīr al-Ṭabarī?" I said, "No." He said, "Why?" I said, "He does not appear; the Ḥanbalīs prevent entry to him." He said, "What a bad thing you have done! Would that you had not written from everyone you wrote from, but had heard from Abū Jaʿfar." Ḥusaynuka, whose name is al-Ḥusayn b. ʿAlī al-Tamīmī, reported from Ibn Khuzaymah something similar to the above. Ibn Khuzaymah said, when he examined the book of commentary by al-Ṭabarī: "I know no one on the face of the earth more learned than Abū Jaʿfar. The Ḥanbalīs wronged him." Al-Khaṭīb said: It reached me from Shaykh Abū Ḥāmid Aḥmad b. Abī Ṭāhir al-Fiqhī al-Isfarāyinī that he said: "If a man traveled to China to obtain the book of commentary by Muḥammad b. Jarīr al-Ṭabarī, that would not be too much"—or words to that effect. Abū Muḥammad ʿAbd Allāh b. Aḥmad al-Farghānī said, after mentioning his works: "Abū Jaʿfar was one of those who are not deterred by any blame in the cause of God, and who do not turn from truth, in his knowledge and exposition, which is incumbent upon him toward his Lord and the Muslims, to falsehood for any desire or fear, despite the great harm and slanders he suffered from the ignorant, the envious, and the heretics. As for the people of religion and piety, they do not deny his knowledge, his excellence, his asceticism, and his renunciation of the world even as it came to him, and his contentment with what came to him from a small village his father left him in Ṭabaristān. His virtues are many; this place cannot contain more than this. A number of scholars elegized him, among them Ibn al-Aʿrābī, who said: A shocking event and a grave calamity Too great for the endurance of the patient; The announcer of the death of all knowledge arose when The announcer of the death of Muḥammad b. Jarīr arose. Then shining stars fell, Whose traces announced their own obliteration; And their brilliant, radiant light was covered By the cloak of pitch-black darkness. And their lovely meadow became withered, And its plains turned into rough terrain. O Abū Jaʿfar, you passed away praiseworthy, Not negligent in striving and diligence, Between a reward full for your effort And a praiseworthy endeavor toward piety, Deserving thereby eternity in the Garden of Eden In felicity and joy. Abū Bakr b. Durayd—may God have mercy on him—also composed a long, resounding elegy for him, which al-Khaṭīb al-Baghdādī transmitted in full. God, glorified be He, knows best. Abū ʿAbd Allāh Muḥammad b. al-ʿAbbās b. Muḥammad b. Abī Muḥammad al-Yazīdī al-Adīb (In this year also died Abū ʿAbd Allāh Muḥammad b. al-ʿAbbās b. Muḥammad b. Abī Muḥammad al-Yazīdī al-Adīb, who took knowledge from Thaʿlab and al-Riyāshī).
