✧ Mention of Several Events In the year 310 AH, al-Muqtadir released Yūsuf b. Abī al-Sāj from prison through the intercession of Muʾnis the eunuch, and he was carried to him. He entered upon al-Muqtadir, who bestowed a robe of honor upon him. Then he appointed him over al-Rayy, Qazwīn, Abhar, Zanjān, Adharbayjān, and imposed upon him five hundred thousand dinars to be delivered every year to the public treasury, apart from the stipends of the troops in these lands. He sent to Muʾnis asking him to send Abū Bakr b. al-Ādamī the Qurʾan reciter. Abū Bakr was afraid because he had recited before him on a day of a month: "And thus is the seizure of your Lord when He seizes the towns while they are wrongdoing" [Q 11:102]. Muʾnis said to him: "Do not fear, for I am your partner in the reward." So he went and entered upon him. He said: "Bring a chair for Abū Bakr." He sat down. He said: "Recite." He recited: "And the king said, 'Bring him to me; I will appoint him exclusively for myself'" [Q 12:54]. He said: "I do not want this; rather I want you to recite what you recited before me when I became notorious: 'And thus is the seizure of your Lord when He seizes the towns while they are wrongdoing.'" He recited and wept, and said: "This verse was the cause of my repentance from every forbidden thing. If I were able to abandon the service of the sultan, I would do so." He ordered that he be given money. Ibn al-Jawzī said: We have mentioned that he became notorious in the year 271 AH, and at that time he recited before him: "And thus is the seizure of your Lord when He seizes the towns while they are wrongdoing." That was during the caliphate of al-Muʿtamid. In this year he invited him as a guest and honored him, and that was during the caliphate of al-Muqtadir. On that day he bestowed robes of honor upon Waṣīf al-Buktumurī and upon Ṭāhir and Yaʿqūb, the two sons of Muḥammad b. al-Layth. Yūsuf made preparations. Al-Muqtadir bi-Allāh attached the troops to him along with Waṣīf al-Buktumurī, and he departed from Baghdādh in Jumādā al-Ākhirah to Adharbayjān. He was ordered to take his route via al-Mawṣil and to look into the affairs of the districts of Rabīʿah. He arrived at al-Mawṣil, examined the administrative matters, and then traveled to Adharbayjān, where he saw that his servant Subuk had died. In this year a gift arrived for Abū Zuqbūr al-Ḥusayn b. Aḥmad al-Mādarānī from Egypt, which included a mule with a foal following it and suckling from it, and a boy with a long tongue that reached the tip of his nose. In this year al-Muqtadir arrested Umm Mūsā the stewardess. The reason was that she married the daughter of her sister to Abū al-ʿAbbās Aḥmad b. Muḥammad b. Isḥāq b. al-Mutawakkil ʿalā Allāh. He was a benefactor with evident wealth and good manliness, and he was being promoted for the caliphate. When she became his in-law, she increased the scattering of coins and banquets, and lost considerable amounts of money. Her enemies spoke against her and denounced her to al-Muqtadir, saying that she had worked for Abū al-ʿAbbās in the matter of the caliphate and made the commanders swear allegiance to him (and much was said against her). He arrested her and took from her great wealth and precious jewels. In this year the Muslims raided by land and sea, and they gained booty and were safe. In this year there was rioting by the common people in al-Mawṣil, and they killed Khalīfah Muḥammad b. Naṣr the chamberlain there. So the army prepared to go from Baghdādh to al-Mawṣil. In this year, in Jumādā al-Ākhirah, a great star with a tail fell in the east in the constellation Virgo; its length was about two cubits. In this year Muḥammad b. Naṣr the chamberlain marched from al-Mawṣil to the raid (against Qāliqilā), and he raided the Byzantines from that direction. The people of Ṭarsūs entered Malaṭyah and were victorious. They reached such places in the Byzantine lands and attained such victory over them as they had not expected, and returned. In this year ʿAlī b. ʿĪsā the vizier fell ill. Hārūn b. al-Muqtadir came to visit him, so he spread the way for him. When he approached his house, he exerted himself and went out to him, conveying the greetings of the caliph. Muʾnis the eunuch came with him. Then news came that the caliph had resolved to visit him, so he asked Muʾnis the eunuch to excuse him, and he rode with great effort until he greeted the caliph, so as not to burden him with riding to him. On Thursday, ten nights remaining of Rabīʿ al-Ākhir, al-Muqtadir appointed to the office of judge Abū al-Ḥusayn ʿUmar b. al-Ḥusayn b. ʿAlī al-Shaybānī, known as Ibn al-Ushnānī. He was one of the memorizers of hadith and jurists of the people, but he was dismissed after three days. Previously he had been muḥtasib in Baghdād. In this year Muḥammad b. ʿAbd al-Ṣamad was dismissed from the police of Baghdād, and Nāzūk was appointed to it and received a robe of honor. In this month letters were read from the pulpits about the conquests in the Byzantine lands. In this year news arrived that in the land of Wāsiṭ the earth split open in seventeen places, the largest of which was a thousand cubits long and the smallest two hundred cubits, and that one thousand three hundred villages of the mother towns were flooded. The people performed the pilgrimage under Isḥāq b. ʿAbd al-Malik al-Hāshimī. In Ramaḍān al-Muṭṭalib b. Ibrāhīm al-Hāshimī was entrusted with leading the prayer in the congregational mosque of al-Ruṣāfah in Baghdād. On the day of the breaking of the fast, the emir Abū al-ʿAbbās b. al-Muqtadir rode to the prayer ground, accompanied by the vizier Ḥāmid b. al-ʿAbbās, ʿAlī b. ʿĪsā, Muʾnis al-Muẓaffar, and the army. Isḥāq b. ʿAbd al-Malik al-Hāshimī led the people in prayer. On Monday, the last day of Dhū al-Qaʿdah, the head of al-Ḥusayn b. Manṣūr al-Ḥallāj was taken out from the sultan's palace to be carried to Khurāsān.
