Translation
✧ The Story of Barṣīṣā It is the opposite of the case of Jurayj, for Jurayj was protected, while that one was put to trial. On the authority of ʿAbd Allāh b. Masʿūd regarding this verse: “Like the example of Satan when he says to man, ‘Disbelieve,’ but when he disbelieves, he says, ‘I am free of you; indeed I fear Allah, Lord of the worlds.’ So the outcome for both of them is that they will be in the Fire, abiding eternally therein. And that is the recompense of the wrongdoers” [al-Ḥashr: 16–17]. Ibn Masʿūd said: There was a woman who tended sheep, and she had four brothers. At night she would take shelter at the hermitage of a monk. He said: The monk came down and fornicated with her, and she became pregnant. Then Satan came to him and said: “Kill her and bury her, for you are a man who is believed and whose word is heard.” So he killed her and buried her. He said: Then Satan came to her brothers in a dream and said to them: “The monk, the owner of the hermitage, fornicated with your sister; when he made her pregnant, he killed her and buried her in such-and-such a place.” When morning came, one of them said: “By Allah, last night I saw a vision; I do not know whether to relate it to you or leave it.” They said: “No, rather relate it to us.” He said: So he related it. Then another said: “By Allah, I too saw that.” Then another said: “By Allah, I too saw that.” They said: “By Allah, this is nothing but something real.” So they went and sought help from their king against that monk. They came to him and brought him down, then went off with him. Then Satan came to him and said: “I am the one who brought you into this, and none but I can save you from it. So prostrate to me a single prostration and I will save you from what I brought you into.” He said: So he prostrated to him. When they brought him to their king, he disowned him, and he was seized and killed. It has also been related from the Commander of the Faithful ʿAlī b. Abī Ṭālib ؓ with another wording. From Abū Isḥāq: I heard ʿAbd Allāh b. Nahīk say: I heard ʿAlī say: A monk worshipped for sixty years, and Satan desired to ruin him but could not. So he turned to a woman and made her insane. She had brothers, and he said to her brothers: “Take her to this priest so that he may treat her.” He said: So they brought her to him, and he treated her, and she stayed with him. While he was one day with her, she pleased him, and he went to her and she became pregnant. Then he turned to her and killed her. Her brothers came, and Satan said to the monk: “I am your companion; you have wearied me. I did this to you, so obey me and I will save you from what I did to you. Prostrate to me one prostration.” So he prostrated to him. When he prostrated to him, he said: “I am free of you; indeed I fear Allah, Lord of the worlds.” That is His saying: “Like the example of Satan when he says to man, ‘Disbelieve,’ but when he disbelieves, he says, ‘I am free of you; indeed I fear Allah, Lord of the worlds.’” This ḥadīth has also been related in another form. From ʿAbd al-Munʿim b. Idrīs, from his father, who said: Wahb b. Munabbih mentioned that there was a worshipper among the Children of Israel, and he was one of the most devout people of his time. In his time there were three brothers who had a sister, and she was a virgin [they had no other sister]. An expedition was called for them, and they did not know with whom to leave their sister, nor whom they could trust with her [nor with whom to place her]. Their opinion settled on leaving her with the worshipper of the Children of Israel [he was trustworthy in their eyes, so they came to him] and asked him to leave her with him, but he refused. They kept at him until he complied. He said: “Put her in a house opposite my hermitage.” So they put her in that house, then departed and left her. She stayed in the vicinity of that worshipper for some time. He would lower food to her from [his hermitage] and place it at the door of the hermitage, then lock his door and go up into his hermitage, then order her to come out of her house and take what had been placed for her of food. He said: Satan was subtle with him and kept enticing him to do good and made it seem grave for the girl to come out of her house in the daytime, and frightened him that someone might see her and attach himself to her. He kept at it until he carried her food and placed it at the door of her house, without speaking to her. He said: He remained like that for some time. Then Iblīs came to him and enticed him to goodness and reward [and urged him to it] and said: “If you were to carry her food to her and place it in her house, your reward would be greater.” He said: He kept at him until he carried her food to her and placed it in her house. He said: He remained like that for some time. Then Iblīs came to him and enticed him to goodness and urged him to it, and said to him: “If you were to speak to her and converse with her so that she becomes familiar with your talk, for she has felt severe loneliness.” He said: He kept at him until he conversed with her for some time, looking out to her from his hermitage. He said: Then Iblīs came to him after that and said: “If you were to come down to her and sit at the door of your hermitage and converse with her, and she sits at the door of her house and converses with you, that would be more companionable for her.” He kept at him until he brought him down and seated him at the door of his hermitage, conversing with her, and the girl would come out of her house and sit at the door of her house. He said: They remained for some time conversing. Then Iblīs came to him and enticed him to goodness, saying: “If you were to come out from the door of your hermitage and sit near her and converse with her, that would be more companionable for her.” He kept at him until he did so, and they remained like that for some time. Then Iblīs came to him and said: “If you were to draw near to the door of her house.” Then he said: “If you were to enter the house and converse with her, and not [let her] show her face to anyone, that would be better.” He kept at him until he entered the house and spent his whole day conversing with her; when evening came, he went up to his hermitage. He said: Then Iblīs came to him after that and kept beautifying her for him until the worshipper struck her thigh and kissed her. Iblīs kept making her attractive in his eyes and embellishing the matter for him until he lay with her and made her pregnant, and she gave birth to a boy. Then Iblīs came to him and said [to him]: “Have you considered, if the brothers of this girl come and she has borne a child from you, what will you do? Go to her child, slaughter him, and bury him, for she will conceal that from you out of fear of her brothers.” So he did. Then he said: “Do you think she will conceal what she did? Take her, slaughter her, and bury her with her son.” So he slaughtered her and threw her into the pit with her son, as we said. He remained in that state as long as Allah willed until her brothers returned from the expedition. They came and asked him about their sister. He mourned her to them, showed mercy for her, and wept, saying: “She was the best of women, and this is her grave.” Her brothers came to the grave and wept for their sister and showed mercy for her, and stayed at her grave for some days, then went back to their families. When night covered them and they took to their beds, Satan came to them in sleep. He began with the eldest and asked him about their sister, and he told him what the worshipper had said and of her death. Satan called him a liar and said: “He has not told you the truth about your sister. He made your sister pregnant, and she bore him a boy, and he slaughtered him and slaughtered her with him, out of fear of you, and threw her into a small pit behind the door of the house.” Then he came to the middle one in his sleep and said the same to him, then to the youngest and said the same. When the people awoke, they awoke astonished at what each of them had seen. They turned to one another, saying: “I have seen something strange.” Each told the others what he had seen. The eldest said: “This is a dream; it is nothing. Come with us and leave this.” But the youngest said: “I will not go until I come to the place and look into it.” So they went and dug at the place and found their sister and her son slaughtered. They asked the worshipper about her, and he confirmed what Iblīs had said about what he had done to her. He said: They sought help from their king against him. He was brought down from his hermitage and put forward to be crucified. When they bound him to the wood, Satan came to him and said: “You know that I am your companion who tempted you with the woman until you made her pregnant and slaughtered her and her son. If you obey me today and disbelieve in Allah who created you, I will deliver you from what you are in.” So the worshipper disbelieved in Allah, glorified be He. When he disbelieved, Satan left him to his companions, and they crucified him. It was about him that this verse was revealed: “Like the example of Satan when he says to man, ‘Disbelieve,’ but when he disbelieves, he says, ‘I am free of you; indeed I fear Allah’” up to His saying: “the recompense of the wrongdoers.”
