Translation
✧ The story of Jurayj, one of the devotees of the Children of Israel Imam Ahmad said with his chain of transmission from Abu Hurayrah that he said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: None spoke in the cradle except three: Jesus son of Mary. He said: And there was among the Children of Israel a devout man called Jurayj, so he built a hermitage and devoted himself to worship in it. He said: The Children of Israel mentioned the worship of Jurayj, so a prostitute among them said: If you wish, I will surely tempt him! They said: We wish that. He said: So she came to him and offered herself to him, but he paid no attention to her. Then she gave herself to a shepherd who used to shelter his sheep at the base of Jurayj's hermitage, and she became pregnant and gave birth to a boy. They said: From whom? She said: From Jurayj. So they came to him, made him come down, reviled him, beat him, and demolished his hermitage. He said: What is your affair? They said: You committed adultery with this prostitute, and she gave birth to a boy. He said: And where is he? They said: He is this one. He said: So he stood, prayed, and supplicated, then turned to the boy and poked him with his finger, saying: By Allah, O boy, who is your father? He said: I am the son of the shepherd. So they rushed to Jurayj and began kissing him, and they said: We will rebuild your hermitage of gold. He said: I have no need of that; rebuild it of clay as it was. He said: And while a woman had in her lap a son of hers whom she was suckling, a rider with a fine appearance passed by her, so she said: O Allah, make my son like this one. He said: So he left her breast and turned to the rider and said: O Allah, do not make me like him. He said: Then he returned to her breast and sucked it. Abu Hurayrah said: It is as if I am looking at the Messenger of Allah ﷺ imitating the child's action, and he placed his finger in his mouth and sucked it. Then a slave woman was passed by while being beaten, so she said: O Allah, do not make my son like her. He said: So he left her breast and turned to the slave woman and said: O Allah, make me like her. He said: That was when they exchanged words, so she said: May you be bereft! The rider with the fine appearance passed by, and I said: O Allah, make my son like him, but you said: O Allah, do not make me like him. And this slave woman was passed by, and I said: O Allah, do not make my son like her, but you said: O Allah, make me like her. He said: O my mother, the rider with the fine appearance is a tyrant among tyrants, and this slave woman—they say: She committed adultery, but she did not commit adultery; and she stole, but she did not steal, and she says: Allah is sufficient for me. And from Abu Hurayrah, from the Prophet ﷺ, who said: Jurayj was worshipping in his hermitage. He said: His mother came to him and said: O Jurayj, I am your mother, so speak to me. He said: And Abu Hurayrah described as the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to describe her: he placed his hand over his right eyebrow. He said: She found him praying. He said: O Lord, my mother and my prayer—so he chose his prayer. She returned, then came to him again and found him praying, and she said: O Jurayj, I am your mother, so speak to me. He said: O Lord, my mother and my prayer—so he chose his prayer. She said: O Allah, this is Jurayj, and he is my son, and I spoke to him, but he refused to speak to me. O Allah, do not let him die until You show him prostitutes. And had she supplicated against him that he be tempted, he would have been tempted. He said: There was a shepherd who used to shelter at his monastery, so a woman went out, and the shepherd fell upon her, and she gave birth to a boy. It was said: From whom is this? She said: He is from the companion of the monastery. So they came with their axes and shovels and came to the monastery, and they called him, but he did not speak to them. So they began demolishing his monastery, and he came down to them. They said: Ask this woman. He said: I think he smiled. He said: Then he wiped the boy's head and said: Who is your father? He said: The shepherd of the sheep. They said: O Jurayj, we will rebuild what we demolished of your monastery with gold and silver. He said: No, but restore it as it was. So they did. And from Abu Hurayrah, that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: There was among the Children of Israel a man called Jurayj who was worshipping in his hermitage. His mother came to him one day and called him, saying: O Jurayj, O my son, look down at me so I may speak to you; I am your mother; look down at me. He said: O my Lord, my prayer and my mother—and he turned to his prayer. Then she returned and called him several times, saying: O Jurayj, O my son, look down at me. He said: O Lord, my prayer and my mother—and he turned to his prayer. She said: O Allah, do not let him die until You show him the prostitute. There was a shepherdess who grazed sheep for her family, then she would shelter in the shade of his hermitage. She committed an indecency and became pregnant, so she was seized—and whoever among them committed adultery was killed—so they said: From whom? She said: From Jurayj, the companion of the hermitage. So they came with axes and spades and said: O Jurayj, O hypocrite, come down. But he refused and turned to his prayer, praying. So they began demolishing his hermitage, and when he saw that, he came down. They placed a rope around his neck and her neck and made them go around among the people. Then he placed his finger on her belly and said: O boy, who is your father? He said: My father is so-and-so, the shepherd of the sheep. So they kissed him and said: If you wish, we will build your hermitage for you of gold and silver. He said: Restore it as it was. This is an unusual wording, and its chain is upon the condition of Muslim, but none of the authors of the books have related it from this route. So these are three who spoke in the cradle: Jesus son of Mary ﷺ, the companion of Jurayj, the son of the prostitute from the shepherd, as you have heard, and the third is the son of the woman who was suckling him, who wished for him that he be like the one with the fine appearance, but he wished to be like that slave woman who was accused of what she was innocent of, and she says: Allah is sufficient for me, and excellent is the Disposer of affairs.
