The Year 308 AH
فِي سَنَةُ ثَمَانٍ وَثَلَاثِمِائَةٍ خَلَعَ الْمُقْتَدِرُ عَلَى أَبِي الْهَيْجَاءِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ حَمْدَانَ ، وَقُلِّدَ طَرِيقَ خُرَاسَانَ وَالدِّينَوَرِ، وَخَلَعَ عَلَى أَخَوَيْهِ أَبِي الْعَلَاءِ وَأَبِي السَّرَايَا. وَفِيهَا وَصَلَ رَسُولُ أَخِي صُعْلُوكٍ بِالْمَالِ، وَالْهَدَايَا، وَالتُّحَفِ، وَيُخْبِرُ بِاسْتِمْرَارِهِ عَلَى الطَّاعَةِ لِلْمُقْتَدِرِ بِاللَّهِ. وَفِيهَا تُوُفِّيَ إِبْرَاهِيمُ بْنُ حَمْدَانَ فِي الْمُحَرَّمِ. وَفِيهَا قُلِّدَ بَدْرٌ الشَّرَابِيُّ دَقُوقَا، وَعُكْبَرَا، وَطَرِيقَ الْمَوْصِلِ. وفي سَنَةُ ثَمَانٍ وَثَلَاثِمِائَةٍ غَلَتِ الْأَسْعَارُ فِي هَذِهِ السَّنَةِ بِبَغْدَادَ فَاضْطَرَبَتِ الْعَامَّةُ وَقَصَدُوا دَارَ حَامِدِ بْنِ الْعَبَّاسِ الَّذِي ضَمِنَ قَرَايَا مِنَ الْخَلِيفَةِ، فَغَلَتِ الْأَسْعَارُ بِسَبَبِ ذَلِكَ، وَعَدَوْا فِي ذَلِكَ الْيَوْمِ وَكَانَ يَوْمَ الْجُمُعَةِ عَلَى الْخَطِيبِ، فَمَنَعُوهُ الْخُطْبَةَ وَكَسَرُوا الْمَنَابِرَ وَدِكَكَ الشُّرَطِ وَحَرَقُوا جُسُورًا كَثِيرَةً، وَأَمَرَ الْخَلِيفَةُ بِقِتَالِ الْعَامَّةِ ثُمَّ نَقَضَ الضَّمَانَ الَّذِي كَانَ حَامِدُ بْنُ الْعَبَّاسِ ضَمِنَهُ فَانْحَطَّتِ الْأَسْعَارُ وَبِيعَ الْكُرُّ بِنَاقِصِ خَمْسَةِ دَنَانِيرَ فَطَابَتْ أَنْفُسُ النَّاسِ بِذَلِكَ وَسَكَنُوا. وَفِي تَمُّوزَ مِنْ هَذِهِ السَّنَةِ وَقَعَ بَرْدٌ شَدِيدٌ جِدًّا حَتَّى نَزَلَ النَّاسُ عَنِ الْأَسْطِحَةِ وَتَدَثَّرُوا بِاللُّحُفِ وَالْأَكْسِيَةِ وَوَقَعَ فِي شِتَاءِ هَذِهِ السَّنَةِ ثَلْجٌ عَظِيمٌ وَكَانَ فِيهَا بَرْدٌ شَدِيدٌ جِدًّا بِحَيْثُ أَضَرَّ ذَلِكَ بِبَعْضِ النَّخِيلِ. وَحَجَّ بِالنَّاسِ فِيهَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ الْعَبَّاسِ أَخُو الْقَهْرَمَانَةِ. فِيهَا: مَلَكَتْ جُيُوشُ الْقَائِمِ الْجَزِيرَةَ مِنَ الْفُسْطَاطِ، وَاشْتَدَّ قَلَقُ أَهْلِ مِصْرَ، وَتَأَهَّبُوا لِلْهُرُوبِ، وَجَرَتْ أُمُورٌ وَحُرُوبٌ يَطُولُ شَرْحُهَا. ومِنَ الْحَوَادِثِ فِيهَا: أَنَّ حَامِدَ بْنَ الْعَبَّاسِ خَرَجَ مِنْ مَدِينَةِ السَّلَامِ إِلَى وَاسِطَ لِلنَّظَرِ فِي الْأَعْمَالِ الَّتِي قَدْ ضَمِنَهَا، وَكَانَ قَدْ ضَمِنَ بُلْدَانًا مِنَ الْخَلِيفَةِ بِأُلُوفٍ، ثُمَّ انْحَدَرَ إِلَى الْأَهْوَازِ، وَعَادَ فَخَلَعَ عَلَيْهِ.
Translation
✧ In the year 308 AH, al-Muqtadir bestowed robes of honor upon Abu al-Hayja' 'Abd Allah b. Hamdan, and he was appointed over the road to Khurasan and al-Dinawar, and he bestowed robes of honor upon his two brothers, Abu al-'Ala' and Abu al-Saraya. In it, the envoy of the brother of Su'luk arrived with money, gifts, and presents, informing of his continued obedience to al-Muqtadir billah. In it, Ibrahim b. Hamdan died in al-Muharram. In it, Badr al-Sharabbi was appointed over Daquqa, 'Ukbara, and the road to al-Mawsil. In the year 308 AH, prices rose in this year in Baghdad, so the common people became restless and headed to the house of Hamid b. al-'Abbas, who had taken on the tax-farming of villages from the caliph, and prices rose because of that. On that day, which was a Friday, they attacked the preacher and prevented him from delivering the sermon; they broke the pulpits and the benches of the police and burned many bridges. The caliph ordered fighting the common people; then he annulled the tax-farming contract that Hamid b. al-'Abbas had undertaken, so prices fell and a kurr was sold for five dinars less, and the people were pleased with that and calmed down. In Tammuz of this year, there was very severe hail, so that people came down from the rooftops and wrapped themselves in blankets and cloaks. And in the winter of this year, there fell great snow, and there was very severe cold in it, such that it damaged some palm trees. Ahmad b. al-'Abbas, the brother of the stewardess, led the people in the pilgrimage in it. In it: the armies of al-Qa'im took possession of the island from al-Fustat, and the anxiety of the people of Egypt intensified, and they prepared to flee, and matters and wars took place whose explanation would be lengthy. Among the events in it: Hamid b. al-'Abbas went out from the City of Peace to Wasit to inspect the tax-farming contracts he had undertaken. He had farmed several towns from the caliph for thousands [of dinars]. Then he went down to al-Ahwaz and returned, and he was given a robe of honor.
