✧ The sending by al-Mahdī al-ʿAlawī of the armies to Egypt In the year 306, al-Mahdī, the ruler of Ifrīqiya, equipped a massive army under his son Abū al-Qāsim and dispatched them to Egypt—this being the second time. He reached Alexandria in Rabīʿ al-Ākhir of the year 307. The governor of al-Muqtadir left the city, and al-Qāʾim entered it. He then marched to Egypt, entered Giza, and took control of al-Ushmūnayn and much of Upper Egypt. He wrote to the people of Makkah inviting them to enter into obedience to him, but they would not accept it from him. News of that reached Baghdād, so al-Muqtadir billāh sent Muʾnis the eunuch in Shaʿbān. He hastened the march until he reached Egypt. Between him and al-Qāʾim there occurred several battles. Eighty ships arrived from Ifrīqiya as reinforcements for al-Qāʾim, and they anchored at Alexandria, carrying Sulaymān the eunuch and Yaʿqūb al-Kutāmī, both brave men. Al-Muqtadir billāh ordered that the ships of Ṭarsūs be sent against them. So twenty-five ships sailed, carrying naphtha and equipment, with Abū al-Yumn as their commander. The ships met the ships, and they fought at Rashīd. The crews of al-Muqtadir's ships were victorious, and they burned many of the Ifrīqiyan ships. Most of their crews perished, and many were taken captive. Among the captives were Sulaymān the eunuch and Yaʿqūb. Many of the captives were killed, and many were released. Sulaymān died in prison in Egypt, while Yaʿqūb was carried to Baghdād. He later escaped from there and returned to Ifrīqiya. As for al-Qāʾim's army, there were many battles between him and Muʾnis, and victory belonged to Muʾnis. He was then given the title al-Muẓaffar. Plague and famine struck al-Qāʾim's army, and many people and horses died among them. Those who survived returned to Ifrīqiya, and the Egyptian army marched in their pursuit until they were driven far away. Al-Qāʾim reached al-Mahdiyya in Rajab of that year.
