the accounts of past peoples from the Israelites and others

Translation

✧ Among them are those who claimed that prophethood was offered to him and he feared he would not fulfill its burdens; so he chose wisdom because it was easier for him, and in this there is room for examination. And Allah knows best. From ʿIkrimah that he said: Luqmān was a prophet. This is weak due to the status of al-Juʿfī. And what is famous from the majority is that he was a wise saint and was not a prophet. From Qatādah who said: Allah gave Luqmān the Wise a choice between prophethood and wisdom, and he chose wisdom over prophethood. He said: Gabriel came to him while he was asleep and sprinkled wisdom over him. He said: He arose speaking with it. Saʿīd said: I heard Qatādah say: It was said to Luqmān: How did you choose wisdom over prophethood when your Lord gave you the choice? He said: If it had been sent to me as prophethood by divine decree, I would have hoped for success therein, and I would have hoped to fulfill it, but He gave me the choice, so I feared that I might be too weak for prophethood, and wisdom was dearer to me. This contains room for examination because Saʿīd b. Bashīr from Qatādah has been criticized. And what Saʿīd b. Abī ʿArūbah narrated from Qatādah regarding His saying 'And We had certainly given Luqmān wisdom' (Q 31:12) he said: meaning understanding in Islam, and he was not a prophet nor was revelation sent to him. Likewise more than one of the early scholars stated this, among them Mujāhid, Saʿīd b. al-Musayyab, and Ibn ʿAbbās. And Allah knows best.
