Translation

✧ He is Luqmān b. ʿAnqāʾ b. Sadūn, and it is said Luqmān b. Thārān, as related by al-Suhaylī from Ibn Jarīr and al-Qutaybī. Al-Suhaylī said: He was a Nubian from the people of Aylah. I say: He was a righteous man, possessing worship, powers of expression, and great wisdom. It is said he was a judge in the time of Dāwūd ﷺ. But God knows best. From Ibn ʿAbbās, who said: He was an Abyssinian slave, a carpenter. And from ʿAbd Allāh b. al-Zubayr: I said to Jābir b. ʿAbd Allāh, “What has reached you concerning the matter of Luqmān?” He said: “He was short, snub-nosed, from Nubia.” Yaḥyā b. Saʿīd al-Anṣārī said, from Saʿīd b. al-Musayyab, who said: “Luqmān was among the blacks of Egypt, with thick lips. God gave him wisdom and withheld prophethood from him.” Al-Awzāʿī said: ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Ḥarmalah narrated to me, saying: A black man came to Saʿīd b. al-Musayyab asking him something. Saʿīd said to him: “Do not grieve because you are black, for three of the best of people were from the blacks: Bilāl, Mihjaʿ the freedman of ʿUmar, and Luqmān the Wise. He was a black Nubian with thick lips.” Al-Aʿmash said, from Mujāhid: “Luqmān was a black slave with large lips and cracked feet.” In another version: “flat-footed.” ʿAmr b. Qays said: “He was a black slave with thick lips and flat feet. A man came to him while he was in a gathering of people, speaking to them, and said: ‘Are you not the one who used to tend sheep with me in such-and-such a place?’ He said: ‘Yes.’ The man said: ‘What brought you to the state I see?’ He said: ‘Truthfulness in speech, and silence regarding what does not concern me.’” From ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Yazīd b. Jābir, who said: “God raised Luqmān the Wise through his wisdom. A man who had known him before saw him and said: ‘Are you not the slave of the Banū Fulān, the one who used to tend sheep yesterday?’ He said: ‘Yes indeed.’ The man said: ‘What brought you to the state I see?’ He said: ‘The decree of God, fulfilling trusts, truthfulness in speech, and abandoning what does not concern me.’” From ʿUmar, the freedman of Ghafrah, who said: “A man stopped before Luqmān the Wise and said: ‘Are you Luqmān? Are you the slave of the Banū al-Ḥasḥās?’ He said: ‘Yes.’ The man said: ‘Are you the black shepherd of sheep?’ He said: ‘As for my blackness, it is evident. But what is it about my affair that impresses you?’ The man said: ‘That people tread upon your carpets, crowd at your door, and are pleased with your words.’ He said: ‘O son of my brother, if you do what I tell you, you will be like that.’ The man said: ‘What is it?’ Luqmān said: ‘Lowering my gaze, restraining my tongue, moderation in my food, guarding my private parts, upholding my obligations, fulfilling my covenant, honoring my guest, protecting my neighbor, and abandoning what does not concern me. That is what made me as you see.’” From Abū al-Dardāʾ, who said one day, mentioning Luqmān the Wise: “He was not given what he was given on account of family, wealth, lineage, or qualities. Rather, he was a resolute man, silent, long in reflection, deep in insight. He never slept during the day at all. No one ever saw him spit, clear his throat, urinate, defecate, bathe, play, or laugh. He never repeated a word he had uttered unless it was a wise saying that someone asked him to repeat. He married and had children, and they died, but he did not weep over them. He used to visit the ruler and come to the judges in order to observe, reflect, and take admonition. Thus he was given what he was given.”
