✧ The dissension of Sijistān and its return to obedience to Aḥmad b. Ismāʿīl al-Sāmānī In the year 300, the amir Abū Naṣr Aḥmad b. Ismāʿīl al-Sāmānī dispatched an army to Sijistān to conquer it a second time, for it had rebelled against him, and those in it were afraid. The reason for that was that Muḥammad b. Hurmuz, known as al-mawlā al-Ṣandalī, was of Khārijī doctrine. He had resided in Bukhārā, though he was from the people of Sijistān, and was a very old shaykh. One day he came to al-Ḥusayn b. ʿAlī b. Muḥammad al-ʿĀriḍ seeking his stipend, and he said to him: "The most fitting thing for an old shaykh like you is to keep to a ribāṭ, worshiping God in it until his appointed time comes to him." That angered him, so he departed to Sijistān while its governor was Manṣūr b. Isḥāq. He won over a group of Khārijites, summoned them to the Ṣaffārid, and gave allegiance in secret to ʿAmr b. Yaʿqūb b. Muḥammad b. ʿAmr b. al-Layth. Their leader was Muḥammad b. al-ʿAbbās, known as Ibn al-Ḥaffār, who was extremely strong. They rose up, seized their amir Manṣūr b. Isḥāq, imprisoned him in the prison of Ark, proclaimed ʿAmr b. Yaʿqūb in the khuṭbah, and delivered Sijistān to him. When the news reached the amir Aḥmad b. Ismāʿīl, he dispatched armies under al-Ḥusayn b. ʿAlī a second time to Zaranj in the year 300. He besieged it for nine months. One day Muḥammad b. Hurmuz al-Ṣandalī climbed onto the wall and said: "What need have you to harm a shaykh who is fit only for keeping to a ribāṭ?" — reminding them of what al-ʿĀriḍ had said in Bukhārā. It happened that al-Ṣandalī died, so ʿAmr b. Yaʿqūb al-Ṣaffār and Ibn al-Ḥaffār sought safe-conduct from al-Ḥusayn b. ʿAlī, and they released Manṣūr b. Isḥāq. Al-Ḥusayn b. ʿAlī used to honor Ibn al-Ḥaffār and bring him close, so Ibn al-Ḥaffār conspired with a group to assassinate al-Ḥusayn. Al-Ḥusayn learned of that. Ibn al-Ḥaffār used to enter upon al-Ḥusayn without being screened from him. One day he entered upon him wrapped in a sword, so al-Ḥusayn ordered him to be seized and took him with him to Bukhārā. When news of the conquest of Sijistān reached the amir Aḥmad, he appointed Sīmjūr al-Dawātī over it and ordered al-Ḥusayn to return to him. He returned, and with him were ʿAmr b. Yaʿqūb, Ibn al-Ḥaffār, and others. His return was in Dhū al-Ḥijjah of the year 300. The amir Aḥmad appointed Manṣūr, the son of his paternal uncle Isḥāq, over Naysābūr and sent him there. Ibn al-Ḥaffār died.
