Translation

✧ THE CAPTURE OF AL-KHALANJĪ In the year 293, a man called al-Khalanjī appeared in Egypt, renounced obedience, and a group of soldiers gathered around him. The caliph ordered Aḥmad b. Kayghalagh, the deputy of Damascus and its districts, to march against him. In Ṣafar, al-Muktafī's army reached the vicinity of Egypt, and Aḥmad b. Kayghalagh advanced with a company of commanders. Al-Khalanjī met them near al-ʿArīsh and routed them most disgracefully. He then dispatched a group of commanders from Baghdad against them, among them Ibrāhīm b. Kayghalagh. They set out in Rabīʿ al-Awwal and marched towards Egypt. Reports of al-Khalanjī's strength continued to arrive, so al-Muktafī went out to Bāb al-Shammāsiyya in Rajab intending to march to Egypt. In Shaʿbān a letter from Fātik reached him stating that he and the commanders had returned to confront al-Khalanjī, and that there had been many battles between them in which a great number were killed. In the last battle most of al-Khalanjī's followers were killed, the rest were routed, they were captured, and their camp was plundered. Al-Khalanjī fled and entered Fusṭāṭ Miṣr, where he hid with a man of the town. We entered the city, and they pointed him out to us; we seized him and the one who had hidden him, and they are in prison. Al-Muktafī wrote to Fātik ordering him to bring al-Khalanjī and those with him to Baghdad. Al-Muktafī returned and entered Baghdad, and ordered his treasuries to be brought back, which had reached Takrīt. Fātik sent al-Khalanjī to Baghdad, and he and those with him entered it in the month of Ramaḍān. Al-Muktafī ordered them to be imprisoned.
