Abī Bishr, Abū ʿAlī al-Muqrīʾ al-Sarrāj: From the people of Sāmarrāʾ. Abū al-Ḥusayn b. al-Munādī narrated from him, and said: He was among the most virtuous of people; the people wrote from him. He died in Surra man Raʾā on the night of ʿArafah of this year. ʿAbd Allāh b. Aḥmad b. Muḥammad b. Ḥanbal ʿAbd Allāh b. Aḥmad b. Muḥammad b. He was a ḥāfiẓ, trustworthy, and firmly established. Aḥmad used to say: My son is fortunate in the knowledge of ḥadīth. Ibn al-Munādī said: There was no one in the world who related more from his father than he, because he heard the Musnad, which is thirty thousand [ḥadīths], and the Tafsīr, which is one hundred and twenty thousand, of which he heard eighty thousand and the rest by ijāzah, and he heard al-Nāsikh wa-al-Mansūkh, al-Tārīkh, Ḥadīth Shuʿbah, al-Muqaddam wa-al-Muʾakhkhar fī Kitāb Allāh Taʿālā, Jawābāt al-Qurʾān, al-Manāsik al-Kabīr wa-al-Ṣaghīr, and other works and ḥadīths of the shaykhs. He said: Our senior shaykhs continued to testify for him with knowledge of the narrators, the defects of ḥadīth, the names, the kunyahs, and his perseverance in seeking ḥadīth in Iraq and elsewhere, and they mentioned their predecessors' acknowledgment of that for him, to the extent that some of them exceeded in praising him for knowledge and for hearing ḥadīth more than his father. When he became ill, it was said to him: Where would you like to be buried? He said: It is established in my view that in al-Qaṭīʿah there is a prophet buried, and that I be in the vicinity of a prophet is more beloved to me than that I be in the vicinity of my father. He died in Jumādā al-Ākhirah with nine nights remaining of this year. The gathering was huge beyond measure, and he was buried in the cemeteries of Bāb al-Tibn, and Zuhayr, the son of his brother Ṣāliḥ, prayed over him. ʿAbd Allāh b. Aḥmad b. Muṣʿab, who said: Abū Muḥammad al-Marwazī came to Baghdad intending Makkah, and I wished to accompany him. I came to him and asked his permission for companionship, but he did not permit me that year. Then he came a second year and a third, so I came to him, greeted him, and asked him. He said: Resolve upon a condition that one of us be the commander whom the other does not oppose. I said: You are the commander! He said: O Abū Muḥammad, no! Rather, you are the commander! I said: You are older and more entitled! He said: Yes, and you must not disobey me! I said: Yes! So I went out with him. Whenever food was presented, he would give preference to me, and if I objected to anything, he said: Did I not stipulate that you not oppose me? This remained our practice until I regretted accompanying him because of the hardship he brought upon himself. One day, a heavy rain overtook us while we were travelling. He said to me: O Abū Muḥammad, seek the mile-marker. When we saw the mile-marker, he said to me: Sit at its base. So he seated me at its base, placed his hands on the mile-marker, and stood bending over me with a cloak over him with which he shaded me from the rain until I wished I had not gone out with him because of the hardship he brought upon himself. This remained his practice until we entered Makkah. ʿUmar b. Ibrāhīm, Abū Bakr al-Ḥāfiẓ, known as Abū al-Ādhān ʿUmar b. I said to him: Are you not ashamed before the people? He said: By God, do you consider these to be people? If they were people, they would not be toyed with as boys toy with a ball. But the people are other than these! I said to him: And who are they? He said: A people in the mosque of al-Shūnīzī who have emaciated my heart and worn out my body. Whenever I set upon them, they point to God Most High, and I nearly burn! Junayd said: I awoke, put on my clothes, and came to the mosque of al-Shūnīzī while night still covered me. When I entered the mosque, there were three persons sitting with their heads in their patched garments. When they sensed that I had entered the mosque, one of them brought out his head and said: O Abū al-Qāsim, you accept everything that is said to you. Ibn Jahḍam said: Abū ʿAbd Allāh b.
