the accounts of past peoples from the Israelites and others

Translation

✧ Allah, may He be exalted, said: “And his fruit was encompassed” — that is, there came to him a command that encompassed all his possessions, ruined his garden, and destroyed it. So he began to turn his hands over what he had spent on it, while it had collapsed upon its trellises — that is, it was utterly ruined, with no return for it. This was the opposite of what he had hoped for when he said: “And I do not think that this will ever perish.” He regretted what had preceded from him of the speech by which he had disbelieved in Allah the Almighty. So he was saying: “Oh, would that I had not associated anyone with my Lord.” Allah, may He be exalted, said: “And there was no company for him to help him besides Allah, nor could he defend himself.” That is, he had no one to repair what had occurred of his affair, and he had no power in himself over any of that, as He, may He be exalted, said: “Then he will have no strength nor any helper” [al-Ṭāriq: 10]. And His saying: “Sovereignty belongs to Allah, the True.” Among them, there are those who begin with His saying: “There, sovereignty belongs to Allah, the True,” which is also good, like His saying: “The sovereignty on that Day will be the True, belonging to the Most Merciful, and it will be a difficult Day for the disbelievers” [al-Furqān: 26]. For the judgment that is not rejected, not resisted, and not overcome — in that state and in every state — belongs to Allah, the True. Among them, there are those who read “the True” in the nominative, making it an attribute of “sovereignty,” and the two are inseparable. And His saying: “He is best in reward and best in outcome” — that is, dealing with Him is best for its owner in reward, which is the recompense, and best in outcome, which is the final result in this world and the hereafter.
