Translation
✧ The war between the army of al-Muʿtaḍid and the sons of Abū Dulaf In the year two hundred and eighty-three, on Saturday when fourteen nights remained of Jumādā al-Ākhirah, ʿUbayd Allāh b. Sulaymān marched against ʿUmar b. ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz b. Abī Dulaf in al-Jabal. ʿUmar came to him under safe-conduct in Shaʿbān and submitted in obedience, so he bestowed robes of honour upon him and upon his household. Before that, Bakr b. ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz had come under safe-conduct to ʿUbayd Allāh b. Sulaymān and Badr, and they appointed him to his brother's office on condition that he march against him and fight him. When ʿUmar entered into the safe-conduct, they said to Bakr: 'Your brother has entered into obedience. We only appointed you to his office because he was disobedient. Al-Muʿtaḍid will do what he sees fit concerning the matter of you both, so go both of you to his gate.' Al-Nūsharī was appointed over Iṣbahān and made it appear that he was acting on behalf of ʿUmar b. ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz, so Bakr b. ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz fled. ʿUbayd Allāh wrote to al-Muʿtaḍid about that, and he wrote to Badr ordering him to remain in his place until he determined Bakr's situation. The vizier marched to ʿAlī b. al-Muʿtaḍid at al-Rayy, and Bakr b. ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz reached al-Ahwāz. Al-Muʿtaḍid sent Waṣīf b. Mūshakīr against him, and he marched to him and caught up with him at the borders of Fārs. They spent the night facing each other, and Bakr departed for Iṣbahān by night, but Waṣīf did not pursue him; rather he returned to Baghdādh, while Bakr marched to Iṣbahān. Al-Muʿtaḍid wrote to Badr ordering him to seek Bakr and fight him, so Badr ordered ʿĪsā al-Nūsharī to do that. Bakr said: Turn your blame from me; it is no time for blame. Far be it—the increase of days has grown barren. The favours of youth were weaned from the crown of my head, And the time of my fierceness and passion has passed. My loved ones cast down their staffs in Iraq, And I remained a target for the misfortunes of days. The afflictions of separation tossed my brother about and hurled Him as slaves are hurled by the severance of kinship ties. I shall strike the hard rock of a time whose fangs have struck them, A strike that shakes the firm mountains of the peaks. I shall smite heads in defence of their sanctuary, With the smiting of the butcher in the lowland of al-Qaddām. I shall leave those who come to their pools In a deep hollow for the treading of feet. O Badr, had you witnessed my stances When death was glancing and swords were dripping, You would have blamed your judgment in wasting my sanctity, And your breast would have been too narrow in casting aside my protection. You stirred me after stillness, but you only Stirred from a fortress the mountains of Tihāmah. You tested me, and you tested in me one who defended Rough-shouldered warriors on every day of crowding. Say to the commander Abū Muḥammad, who Dispels with his radiant forehead the darkness of gloom: You settled me in the shade of loftiness, and I dwelt there In a life of ease and abiding might. Until when you parted from me, calamities befell me, Disasters came, and my days turned strange. I shall thank you for the beauty of what you granted me As long as ringdoves coo in the thicket. This is Abū Ḥafṣ—my hand and my treasure For misfortunes, my equipment and my camel's hump. I called him and he answered me, and I shook him and I shook The edge of the sharp cutting sword. Whoever seeks to lower his eyelids upon the mote, or to submit, seeks what cannot be sought. And he will shrink when he sees the lances levelled And the white swords unsheathed for smiting heads. Then al-Nūsharī was routed before Bakr, and Bakr said, mentioning his flight, reproaching Waṣīf for holding back from him, and threatening Badr, in verses of which are: Al-Nūsharī saw, when we met, one who flees when lances are levelled. He came in a dust-cloud for heads, and we made a charge before which the heroes snarl. The banner of al-Nūsharī is the traces of a fire at which white swords and brown spears were quenched. My forbearance, the excellence that came to me, and my endurance of the burden deceived Badr—such things deceive. Soon there will come to him from my horses, lean-flanked, with slender bellies, black and sorrel, Calling to one another like ghouls upon them, from the Banū Wāʾil, lions that return again and again. I am not Bakr if I do not leave them as a tale as long as a star travels by night and time returns.
